View Full Version : Winch revival.....

I'm picking up a used winch bar this weekend that already has an X9 Superwinch installed (must've been there 15 years or more) and it runs.
Any thoughts on which items I'll likely need to refresh to be sure its in serviceable condition? Or are they not that good and am I better off selling it and buying a new one?
Cheers,
Drew.

Give it a good clean and grease, check and file clean the electrical connections. To start with??

The Superwinch is a Toyota factory fit winch on their range.

I bought what looked like an almost new one and got it home and fortunately bench tested it before I fitted it to the GUIV. FAIL!

Give it a good look over. Easy to strip and an exploded diagram is available online.

I stripped the gearbox and cleaned it up and then also opened to motor and made sure it was clean.

Works good now ;)

Drew here are some pics of when I pulled down my very very clean looking Superwich! Seriously thought this winch had been used maybe once in anger and came off a 200 series

Look at the wire rope!!! Tidy!!

Can you seal Superwinchs to stop water getting in? I've never had one apart. Done a few Warns that had smiler problems.

Yes I sealed mine up when I rebuilt it and added a breather.

That is a fantastic idea, Darren. Where did you put the breather, did you extend it under the bonnet?

Im surprised you can get parts or am I thinking of Premier Winches.
Which brand came from WA ???

very carefully drilled and tapped a hole in the motor housing between the windings and added a pneumatic line from there up to the engine bay. Using a hot winch out of water and it will suck air / water into the windings and gearbox. let it breath.

Some ppl also pressurize with small psi of air to keep water out.
Easy enough to do as well

I've read that an old air horn compressor can be hooked up to the diff, transfer case and gear breathers as well. how do you regulate the pressure?

Yeah I have that setup into my Himount but to be honest just never needed it. It makes a good vent though ;)

Hey Daz,
Pulled the Superwinch apart today and though needing a bit of work (its had water in it) looks like its lucky if its been used more than half a dozen times in anger. Gearbox almost looks unused. Funny, because from the outside it looks knackered. The opposite of yours.
I'll put up some pics tomorrow.
When you sealed it up, did you use silicone?
Did you put a breather in both gearbox AND motor?

Muc the truck posted this in another forum but might help clean other parts in a container?

You can fix rusty jerries and bring them back like new with some duct tape , threaded rod , water , washing powder and a battery charger. those old jerries with scale and rust flakes can do another 40 years of service

simply fill the jerry with water, and some washing powder. tape the threaded rod so it is insulated from touching the jerry can but deep inside the jery under water. make sure it does not touch the jerry at al any were. then attach the positive to the threaded rod or reo bar and the negative to the out side of the jerry. leave it on for 5-8 hours . if your not filling it up with fuel straight away and have the time and money coat the inside with poor15

Hey Daz,
How did you get this bit apart? I've pharked around with it for a while and it looks like it joins at the top plate but I can't shift it.
I've currently got it soaking in the parts washer to loosen things up a bit hopefully....
Cheers,
Drew

That's interesting, the two cases are slightly different........mine looks like it should separate at the top rather than halfway up. Mine also has a ring around the middle too......earlier model perhaps.
Hmmm.
I'll let it stew overnight and see if I can get it apart tomorrow......
Cheers

So I've got it apart and giving it more of a soak. Needed some careful persuasion from a hammer and chisel to open it up.
Question: the bearings for the gears in the planetary assembly, will they need to be re-greased now they've been sitting in the parts washer fluid? They appear to be a sealed type so not sure how best to do that....
Thoughts?
Cheers?

It's all good. I think can pack them with grease from the inside.

Here are a couple of those pics I promised

31702317033170431705

Good thing I looked. The crash last week has kinked the motor breather!

Note that I did both these breathers before I realized I had to mount the bloody thing upside down!

Had I have known I would have rotated the gear box another 1/4 and put the breather behind the free spool leaver ;) and the motor breather at the top! Damn it!

Both fine though just not ideal.

With the new waterproof greases available these days, you should be protected better,
or as I just found out some paint the lot with a product called POR15, this stuff is ledgendary.
Maybe run a breather while you have it apart, or run a small amount of compressed air into it prior to river crossing.
old air horn compressors are ideal,

During the service, I found the braking system was back to front......
I have just found 1 plastic bushing which is a biatch. The only thing i have left over. I'm pretty sure it goes near one end of the drum but I'm not sure if I can be forked pulling the whole thing apart again just to drop that in.
I'll see how I feel about it in the morning.

So a couple more things I need to finish this off is some 5 core trailer cable and I'd like new +ve and -ve battery feed cables.
Anyone got an idea where the best place to go for those bits is?

A Welding Supplies or Electrical Whole Salers for the Wire. 35mm2 and get them to Crimp the connectors on to both ends for you. Run some lengths of string or Rope out to get the length right and then take them in and ask them t make up the cables to suit. I am running 70mm2 ;)

The 5 core from Super Cheap or any auto supplies. I assume you need the 5 core for an incab controller?

Just thinking about this, do I need to fuse anything? Doesn't seem right doing it without one.......

No fuse between the winch, solenoid and battery. You can fuse your switching circuit if you like though. Are you going to install an led light above the winch on the bar? I have this wired through the master control circuit. Pissa!

Nah mate it actually puts them in Shadow. a head torch is good but i have a semi trailer marker light attached to the back of the rego plate shining back on the winch, means anyone close can see how the rope is bunching without having to shine a torch in there. A light is a winner.

Drewboyaus

The light is indeed a good idea!
I think I'll look at doing that......
Hopefully I'll have it all installed in time for the snow.
Now to see a man about some cable.

Just wondering what you used? Sorry if it sounds stupid, but a sleeve over the rope or on the drum? I assume it is just to protect the rope from the heat of the brake? My cable took a kink and needs replacing and debating whether to put steel or rope (cost is the only real issue I think)

You can buy a sheath about 5m long that you can fit the the first bit to help protect it from the drum. I actually wrapped my drum in Denso Heat shield and the sheath described above. The rope is much much lighter and safer and easier to use.
