My 1st question was to be why the flasher unit blows and not the fuse, but have read on another thread that this has happened to others. its a bummer cause a fuse for a $ or a can for $35 I know which I would rather have blown.
2nd question where could the short be, many have suggested on other post that it may be the trailer wiring , I will check that next.
I am thinking the short maybe in the indicator/headlight switch as prior to the relay blowing when I turned on the ignition and then the lights the high beam warning light came on with low beam plus I can turn the spotties on as well, but once I flicked the indicators on the high beam warning light went off and all was normal again, this was going on for about a week b4 the relay burnt out, put a new relay in and it worked a few times then blew.
So the main question is should i go and buy a new switch?
I would play around with other stuff but with it costing $35 a time to test if i fixed it, the less guessing I have to do the better

Yeah many times when screwing the trailer plug to the back wires get squashed causing short.
Get the multi meter out and test light , interesting where the short is now

I doubt your problem with the indicators will be with your switch.

I would start by checking your trailer plug wire harness for damage or loose wires at the back of the trailer plug.

Also check the main earth cable that runs from the negative post of the battery and connects to the body just under the battery, make sure it is clean and tight.

Also check the wire harness that goes to the indicators in your bull bar (if it has any) make sure the aren't rubbing on the bull bar or the radiator support panel

The problem you had with your high beam warning light is more then likely a problem with the switch. It could also be a bad earth or connection at the back of the driver side head light.

no indicators in the bull bar , so thats 1 less thing to check, i did tap into the drivers side head light for the driving lights so i will check there . its just a bugga that if i check everything and see nothing wrong or think i find it and have fixed it and it turns out to be wrong that i will distoy another $35 relay. i will put a lower amp fuse in b4 I do i think maybe then it will blow 1st

You can bypass the flasher relay for testing.

Unplug the flasher relay and join the two coloured wires together with some wire..........don't join the Black wire.

The indicators won't flash but will still light up.

What size fuse are you using?

Thanks Yender I did ponder that in my sleep last night. I am pretty sure that its a 10 amp fuse(this is the most moden car I have owned so I am use to the glass fuses or the plastic ones with the strip down the side, it is blue), sun is out today so i will be spending sometime sorting it out.

ok I replaced the blue 10 amp fuse with a red 10 amp fuse, rewired the trailer connector and secured it better (well properly this time) made a little wire to replace the flasher unit and all seems to be working ok now. i wont put a flasher unit in for a week or 2 just to be sure. a turn signal coming on and staying on is better than no turn signal. I have wired up many a motorbike with a trailer plug and never had an issue, 1st time doing it to a car, I think it was shorting out on the tow/bummber bar as my connection into the main wiring harness was sloppy and not zipp tied to the bar.

I checked all the fuses and found 3 to be the wrong amp size , the joys of owning a preloved car

I would get an electronic flasher relay.........they normally last longer.

I like the Tridon brand.
