Heres a pic of spring from guy up the roads RTC steering dampner.
Steel has just gone weird, its a well known brand, so I'll take it back on his behalf and see what they say, could have been a crook batch, so no point naming anyone. IMO

Not even one year, IMO from my limited blacksmithing it looks like
the steel wasn't hot enough before being worked. it looks cyrstallized.
We'll see what the shop has to say, if others did the same then
maybe a few slipped through the cracks . Showed it to Billy bleed as he came around
his opinion was the same,"weird"

Cheap Chinese crap.. your nearly right 3D. Its a fault right back in the extrusion stages. Impurities in the steel don't melt and you get delimitation. I only know this as I've seen it first and with sheet metal and flat bar. I've gone to cut the plate and when its hit the floor it splits down the middle..
I'd hate to know how many jobs out there are help together with delimited steel..
Not cool though.. thus why we buy aus quality 3D..

Thanks Kallen thought it was in process as I heated some steel befoe I got my forge in a potbelly
Didnt get it hot enough and after a few hits on the Anvil the steel split. Not going to name shop
But I would say Chinese CR$P from what I know, so now just get another cheap replacement or money back.
But it does alert ppl to the lower end of the market and the Shite they expect us to put up with.
LESSON HERE FOR ALL

expect to see a whole lot more of it, we are now being flooded with cheap chinese knockoffs & stuff for the average punter who wouldnt know the difference, just believing the hipe from some mobs, worse still is some media outlets are flogging inferior stuff cheap but branding it as quality. it the last 8 weeks I have been out to play 6 times & on 3 occassions I have come across a failed part on a vehicle from one of the biggest of these non quality suppliers, the worse being a rockslider that slid into the rear wheel on a rock climb, had to skulldrag him over, deflat the tyre to back off the pressure, unbolt the "rockslider", I took one look at it once it was out & thought "sidestep", this is the second one in 4 weeks now, same brand, if it wasnt for experienced guys there it was a major safety issue, snatch & winch wasnt a safe option due to time

"Cheap Chinese crap" ...
Really?? Weren't you bringing in Chinese made winches a month or so ago till "someone" on the forum helped you and steered you clear of dealing with the specific company you were dealing with?? Same person gave you all the information, told you how to respond to the forum to protect your reputation (which you followed to the letter), and then you have the audacity to jump onto this???
Seriously??? Not a fan of people 'playing' both sides to suit their own needs ..
To quote you "not cool" ...

I thought it failed due to hidden taxes or the like.... Is there more to the story?

Lets hope they have a recall. Name the brand so others can avoid or at least take it back for examination/warranty etc!

You are on the money Dhuck, everyone's going on about Chinese "shit", it's not the country putting out shit, it's small company's, australian, american, indian and chinesetrying to make a quick buck, and don't get me wrong there are some small company's out there building stuff of a very high quality, it still pisses me off that people keep going on about the Chinese build quality.
It's fact that NASA source most of there components from china because they have a very stringent quality and building process.
Just about everything you buy is made in china and you have one thing break and it's those damn Chinese and their build quality or shit materials.
Give it a break people

Ill say it one more time. There's china and there is china.
The quality and powder coating from our products in the playground industry from china shit all over the Australian market unfortunately folks and I'm being serious. I took some posts to a powder coating company last week and they couldn't match the quality.
If you care about the products you sell then you will sell quality gear but unfortunately some people just want an easy buck.

The seller cant honestly say it was abused off road can they? I'm no metalurgist but it looks to me that the steel is very poor quality (where ever it's from).
On another note, how can a steering dampener be abused? Maybe get smashed on a rock or something but apart from that what do ya do? Steer left and right too much?

Something that a lot of people have forgot is that there vehicles consist of Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean and other Asian made components. These Asian countries actually have some of the best quality control. It is the labor that is cheap. This does not make the product crap.
Posted using a computer made of components from China.

Yep agree my third, "Jap crap" was the term often used !
People/Humans in general, seem very quick to jump on the "band wagon" of hate, all because it seems everyone else is jumping on, and its oh so easy to join in, even if they themselves have no experience or first hand information to go on.

Well the seller does not matter but this is a "TOUGH DOG " RTC steering damper,
IMO no way breathing was this broken because of "DRIVER ERROR",The spring
looks like rope or string , If anyone here is from Tough Dog more than happy to post
Failed product to you to follow Quality control and get a replacement. Just very weird
and think a few slipped through the gap as previosly stated

Is it corrosion though? I'm guessing that even if you splashed the spring in salt water weekly for a year it still wouldn't look Luke that on the inside?
Surely there's a knowledgable steel type of guy that can tell if it's corrosion or poor steel??
twase
25th May 2013, 08:46 PM
That aint corrosion, I would expect if it was corrosion it would be from the outside suface penetrating inward not all the way through. Even then it would have to be submerged in the sea for years to look like that. I have seen WW2 ship wrecks in better condition than that.

That's so wrong that they won't at least replace it.
If that's caused by corrosion I would hate to see what the rest of the vehicle look's like.

That is f'ed 3d. Totally not corrosion. Pm me his number and ill get into them..
As mentioned above, he'd need to go bath in an pure salt bath to get that failure in the given time..
But its come from inside.. its a fault in the steel..
An I call BS on 50 a month.. that's over 600 a year from one 4x4 place.. probably 20 good 4x4 shops in melb, so 12000 a year combined.. they ain't that popular..

The only time I have seen springs look remotely delineated like that, was on the rail tractor which used to push the grain wagons in the Portland Terminal, and that had been used there for many years.
