View Full Version : Are there alternative tyres that are a bit more 'balloon' for sand on my standard rim

Ok, this is what I've got:
1990 SWB GQ 4.2lt petrol Auto. Stock standard, newish springs, no lift.
Primarily for towing a boat but also use it for playing in the sand.
Changed out the old tyres it came with about 2-3 years ago for LT tyres mainly for a better ride on the tarmac. Transformed the handling and it's still good in sand with pressures down to 10psi.

However I'm thinking I could do better with a wider tyre, maybe taller too, in the sand pit.

Is there something that is available that would fit on another set of standard rims that I could swap over when I go playing?

These are the markings on the rims: J15 X 7JJDOT TOPY 616905 3.840300 02J00 NISSAN
These are the tyres I have now: GOODYEAR WRANGLER 31 X 10.5R15LT

I don't want to lift and I don't care about speedo changes - it's about 10% optimistic anyway, when it works.

Your pretty much at the limit with a 10.5" wide tyre on a 7" rim. So you can only go larger diameter some tyre manufactures do a 32x10.5 tyre. Remember when airing down its not just the width of the foot print your increase but also the length.

If I'm going to get another set of rims, then maybe I'm be better getting a set of 16"?

Yeah 15x8 will let you go to a 12.5 tyre and a much bigger footprint.

Is there an issue with this size fitting in the wheel well? I don't want to lift.

Is the inner offset the same or is this variable? I don't want to fiddle with spacers either.

THe Nissan offset is Positive 10. if you go for a Neg 13 15x8 rim and run a 33x12.5 15 tyre you should have very little dramas. maybe need to remove your front mud flaps but that would be about it mate.

Thanks, all. That's given me some food for thought. :)
