View Full Version : Deleting Threads and Posts

Hi everyone,
I appears that I have upset some of the members here by deleting a thread lately.
I hope that these members will stay here and forget it, after all there are more important things to worry about in life than the deletion of a thread or post.
I do not, and will never apologise for deleting anything on our forum that I deem inappropriate.
If I delete a thread or a post and it was seen to be OK by AB and he undeletes it, I will not get upset about it.
I am only doing what I think is the best for our forum, and I only answer to AB.
All the best to everyone,
Wayne

Sometimes I don't agree to this, as we should be free to say what we like, or if somebody feel something is inappropriate then we should be told about it and given a chance to edit the post.
But no, some of you feel an instant delete is necessary but no chance for explanation.
Some may feel they are on power trips, which may be the case.
Rant over. Apologies Doggie.

It would be nice to know why a thread is deleted, a while ago I was replying to a post and it was deleted mid reply.
Also are people given the option to amend a post before deletion?
Just asking, I haven't had anything deleted.

Some threads are deleted due to requests.. I think the mods do allow a resolution if its an issue..
Sure something needs deleting for privacy, risk of sue etc..

I do like the idea of asking the person to amend their post first if a mod deems part of it inappropriate. As discussed too if a mod doesn't approve the entire thread than just ask me and I'll make the decision. As doggy said he wouldn't mind either way from my decision which I have total respect of his comment so hope all other mods and forum members can agree too.
Anyways I've just been through an absolute month of crap and these issues on the forum just seem so trivial to me at the moment....lol....just enjoy life boys!

Yes we can ask members to amend their posts, but some posts or threads require an instant decision and as moderators we have to make that decision.
Thanks for bringing that up, if possible I will do that................we are not perfect, we do make decisions on the spur of the moment but we as moderators have to do that sometimes

My thoughts based on my experience on other forums as both an 'ordinary member' & as a moderator.
I must admit I prefer that if/when a post or a thread is deleted that in place of the deleted content that a moderator message be left giving a brief explanation of why. Eg. 'Thread deleted due to inappropriate content'. I think that such acknowledgement of a once existing thread is 'good manners' compared to one which just 'disappears'. I realise that this possibly 'invites' unhelpful discussion & criticism of moderator action, but I also think it important that moderators do not allow themselves to get sucked into such discussion, as this only ever has a negative effect on the forum.
Another alternative to deletion is locking of a thread (thread remains but no further additions can be made) where deemed appropriate, also with a brief explanation saying why. Such an action serves as an 'educational tool' for everyone, giving real examples of what is not acceptable.
The only time I think that threads should be deleted without public acknowledgement are those commenced with the intent of criticising moderator actions. In these circumstances I think it better for the instigator of the thread to receive a PM. It's a fine line but I also differentiate between criticising & asking questions to gain an understanding. These fine line judgements are the domain of the moderators.

Just remember not to have an aggressive tone to your MOD posting duties. Can easily become a slinging match ( which I enjoy, if you already haven't noticed.)

I'm not sure Wayne why you felt the need for this thread.
I don't think anyone here (well I can't remember reading a post anyway) that has ever been disrespectful to a mod, we all appreciate the work that you guys do and we fully realise that you all work under direction.
I don't know about revolution maybe evolution!!!!!!!! Hahahaha

I agree with you, no one here has ever been disrespectful to any of the mods in all my time here (which seems like forever..LOL), we have a bloody great crew of members here and I do not want any of them to leave.
This thread is just to let everyone know of my thoughts on the moderation of threads and posts, and maybe get a bit of feedback so that we can all learn from it.
