Hi all,
Just bought a second hand GU IV 4.2TD Patrol. It has the 17 inch alloy factory wheels (plus 3 extra so I have 8). I have a full set of the 16 inch Nissan steel rims from my previous Patrol down the side of the house and I also have them on my camper. I like to have the camper using the same tyres and wheels as the car. I use BFG ATs and I'll eventually get a set of muddies as a second set. Now I can go either way - 16 inch steel rims all round or 17 inch alloy all round. I'll probably sell the ones I don't use. Most of my driving is black top but we do a lot of camping/off road stuff.
Any advice on 16 vs 17 inch rims?

Thinking more tyre choices with 16"
Better bushibality {repairs} with steel sunnies.
16" tyre carcasses everywhere.
If you dont like the colour you can always sandblast and powder coat
to colour of your choice, Silver,?

Check that the 16's fit the front first..
If all good then 16's. Bigger range of tyres and cheaper..
Plus the 17' alloys are going for 200 if in good condition, each...

I hope I am not hijacking your thread Mick .
does anyone know if there is any issues with 15's onto a GQ ...do they fit over the brake caliper etc..especially with mag wheels with what I think may have a thicker rim as to steel rims ...16's on now and they look close already ?
cheers Menace

Menace, GQ's came with 15's so they should fit just fine
GU 's come with 16's from factory, but can fit 15's, 16's and 17's, generally, except for the 4.8 with the larger brakes

Would go with the 16's for sure mate, more options for tyres and cheaper rims if you ever bend one, 15's are even cheaper again but some people prefer the extra room around their brakes with the 16's.

Bit of a thread dig bit in a similar situation.
Factory 4.2 wagon currently running 33s on the standard 17inch factory alloys. Wanting to upgrade to steel rims in the not to distant future and just wondering the pros and cons of 16 inch vs 17 inch rims, still in 33inch tyres? Also after any recommendations on brands of rims. Not after fancy fake bead locks or anything, just a standard good quality rim

If you want to tour in the outback, 16” are a no brainer. Every little place which keeps a few tyres has 16”. Other sizes could see you waiting for weeks.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Would 16 inch tyres be cheaper as well?

Can't say for sure as I've never bought any, but given that 16" seem to be the widely available size I would think the answer would be 'Yes'.

Thanks Cuppa. What offset is a safe bet? I think standard is +10 so tossing up between 0 and -12?
