I'm the proud owner of a 95 Nissan Safari (just introduced myself in the Member Nissan Patrol Section). Just took the troll out for it's maiden voyage up some BC logging roads for an overnight camp.

This question has been posted on patrol4x4.com as well but would like to get some input from here.

I've used the search function and have been reading lots and lots on patrols. My question is if the smoking shown in the video on a cold start is normal or abnormal. I've been reading about smoke and different colors but would like to check with the experts. Have a look at my video.

Details:
Glow plug has been on for 30 seconds before turning over. Once started, idle is held around 1500 RPM for another 30 sec before driving off. After the car has warmed up, any other starts for the day start instantly with no smoke. Car stored in a heated garage. 1995 Nissan Safari (Y60) with a TD42T engine.

Service done by previous owner:
Oil changes every 4k @ 15W40 Rotella
Injector re&re service at 153,000km

Car is at 156,000km and was running on 50/50 diesel/WVO mix. Now running almost all on diesel.

Thanks,
Ian

I can't tell by the video if it is oil or unburnt diesel.

Better ad something constructive lol. It seems as though you may have a glow problem as it blows a bit of white smoke then it gets darker as it fires.

I would start by checking the operation of each glow plug.

Was the veggie oil commercial grade or home made?

When was the fuel filter last replaced? any growth inside it?

Trust them they really do know stuff!

A dodgy glow would explain why it took so much cranking.

The 3 Amigos above have you well covered though bloke.

Hi,

Thanks for checking in. It was a dead injector! All fixed now.
