Hi all, changed the glow plugs on my TD42 GQ and now she no go. I have power right across the rail, what else should I test? Oh I blew the fuse for the glow plugs too so gotta find one somewhere!

They earth through the head. Your power supply sounds like you have a dead short if its blowing fuses. Are the glow plugs the same as what came out?
Winnie
11th May 2013, 03:42 PM
Blowing the fuse was my stupid fault. New plugs have a small plastic ring on the top, smaller thread held on with a little 7mm nut. I took them off after it didn't work and I think it shorted them. Turned ignition on and smoke came out of the fuse holder. This is old compared to new look the same to me but different brands. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/05/87.jpg

So it doesn't glow or won't start?
Winnie
11th May 2013, 03:54 PM
No 3D I unplugged the glow rail though and Yes I plugged it back in haha.
Mat it won't start so I'm assuming it's not glowing? They were definitely the problem in the first place. This is what was smoking, think it's a fuse anyway?

Yeah that's a fusible link. You will need to replace that first. It's looks simple but they can be sensitive and any voltage drop across it won't be helping you at all.
So you had power to the rail before you ruined the fuse, have fixed the short and now it won't glow? See if your other wagon has one and swap it out. Clean all your plugs even scratching the connectors to clean em up a bit and see how you go.
Yendor
11th May 2013, 04:04 PM
Do you have an alarm or shut down timer fitted?
I think that fuse is the wrong type for your vehicle but if you were getting power to the glow plug rail this can't be your problem.
With the ignition on, use your test light and check the fuses in the fuse box inside the vehicle.

The plastic ring goes under the rail to stop it shorting.

Yep that's right, but there is no power to the rail anymore after I ruined the fuse. I'll check my other one but being petrol it won't have one?? So should I take the little 7mm bolt off the top of the plugs that is on top of the plastic rings?

Your other one should have one.
The glow plugs should have the plastic ring then the small nut to hold it on then glow rail and the the nut to hold the rail on.

After reading your previous post, don't worry about checking the fuses inside.
Fit the insulators and replace the fuse.

Yeah that's how I had it? Didn't work. Before I touched anything if I glowed the plugs about 5 times it would start, not now. That's when I took the plastic rings off and blew the fuse.
The glow light still comes on in the dash and the timer still works too.

Nah I don't have a multimeter just a test light so all I can say is it was getting at least 6V. Just checked my other patrol and it has a different size fuse there for the rad fan.

The glow fuse and other connections are full of a paste type stuff?
Last weekend my battery died, jump started and gave it a good drive. 5 minutes later it was flat, I thought battery was dead so swapped it and was fine after that. Went to drive it the week after and plugs were dead.

Check the fuses inside now. There should be one marked IP. Check all of then.......turn the ignition on and make sure you have power on both sides of the fuses.

You will need to check you are getting power to the solenoid at the the injector pump....with ignition on.
If you don't have an alarm or shut down timer fitted you should be getting power there but you will need to check.
Have you refitted the insulators and replaced the glow plug fuse?
How's your battery now? is it still turning the engine over fast enough while cranking?

Possibly a fuel supply problem......maybe a faulty solenoid on the injector pump???
Get the glow plugs working first and see how it starts.

No......not if you haven't got the insulators fitted to the glow plugs.
If you do have the insulators fitted you can get some wire and temporary touch it on the positive battery post and the glow plug rail.....carefully, this wire will get hot.
Then try and start it.
Winnie

That's not the main fusible link they are talking about that's the fuse in the fuse box inside the vehicle I asked you to check.
It's the 15 amp fuse on the left hand side five down from the top. With ignition on does this fuse have power on both sides?
Have you checked for power at the solenoid on the injector pump?
You do have plenty of diesel in the fuel tank?

I will check this tomorrow.
Where abouts on the vehicle is the cutoff solenoid and how do I test it?
Alitis007
20th May 2013, 12:21 AM
I'm guessing it would be around the injector pump mate if your talking bout the fuel cut off solenoid, most likely you would test it for 12v at the plug. Theres not too many wires on a diesel so you should be able to find it fairly easy.
Your not talking about the lift pump are you Chris?? The one thats on the injector pump with an arm attached to it?? If it is that usually has 2 wires coming out of the motor/solenoid and is powered thru a ballast resistor.
Winnie
20th May 2013, 06:20 PM
Good news everyone! Replaced the fusible link today but still have no power on the glow rail when I should have... Put a cable from the battery to the rail and it started.
So the fault is definitely in the glow wiring somewhere. When I turn on the ignition I can hear and feel the relay click, then about 10 seconds later it clicks again, so would that mean that the timer is okay? Dash light works as it ever did, goes off in about 3 seconds.
I tested that I have power on both sides of the fusible link, and at the plug that is right next to the glow rail which doesn't have power, so it is being lost somewhere between the two.
Last time I put the cable from battery to glow rail I was by myself, this time I had another pair of hands and could hold the cable on while turning the engine over, maybe that's why it wouldn't start last time?
Any ideas where the issue could be now?

Same with the fusible link you replaced today what coloured wires go to this one.

The "glow cont" fuse is under the same cover as the big blue fusible link that is labelled "glow" that is bolted to the battery tray.
It's really hard to tell which wires go where but I can tell for sure that the white with red trace does not go to the blue fusible link that I replaced today, it looks like it is going to the brown 25A fusible link labelled "glow cont"
