hi guys just wondering if anyone on here has done a front mount conversion on a 2.8 gu?
my standard top mount has split at the join and is leaking boost.
i wanna put a front mount on im a boily by trade so fabricating it all up wont be a problem just wondering if theres any tips tricks etc like mounting position, over heating issues from loss of air flow, where you ran your pipe work any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks joel
p.s i did do a search but could only find GQ 2.8's with front mount converions

I don't think there is too much difference between the GQ and GU as far as a front mount is concerned. You have to make custom brackets anyway....
Cheaper to replace top mount as is, as I don't think the performance gain will be worth the cost, but you never know till you try it.

I don't have any solid figures for you, but I believe a front mount would give heaps of gain.
The idea of a front mount is to cool the air before it goes into the engine. The air heats up due to being compressed by the turbo.
Cooler air means the density is higher. Everyone agrees with enlarging the intake to allow more air in (and therefore upgrading the exhaust too). Higher density air means you can put more fuel in.
A top mount is the worst place ever to put an intercooler. When you next come back from a drive, carefully feel the intercooler. The outlet (engine side) should be cooler than the inlet, right? Chances are it isn't in the standard form. It suffers from heat soak and is in the wrong spot for airflow - even with a fan to suck air down through it. (I read somewhere the exact speed where the scoop and vehicle speed had an effect).
A front mount in front of the aircon condenser would be the go. (for the tough, remove the aircon and create a space).
(it may be necessary to add some sort of air/fuel controller and have a tune afterwards)
To summarise, I don't have any hard data for a diesel patrol. Petrol vehicles definitely benefit. If I had more resources, it would definitely be on my list.
