View Full Version : Pullin my head...

Well maybe..
First up, can the head be removed while in the body? I have a 1" body lift?
Secondly. If I was to pull it off can it be bolted back with new head gasket? Or is it like the ford alloy heads, need to be machined everytime.. ?
And thirdly. All I want to do is replace head gasket ( leaking externally slightly), check bores and maybe drop a new set of rings in.. can this be done with motor in?
Cheers

Will ac condenser need to be removed to take engine out? I'm guessing I'd have to de gas it anyway to remove the ac pump..

Can be easily done in car westy. I have done a minor overhaul on one that way. With the head certainly get it skimmed and checked at the least if you do it properly the first time you won't have to take it off for a very long time.
I did new big end bearings, hone, rings and head all the car mate its not hard at all. Remove the bonnet though certainly makes it a lot easier.

Old girls done half a mill, do you think it would be worth looking at rings, big end bearings, hone etc? Or does 'if it ain't broke don't touch' come into play?

If your gonna have it apart a minor freshen up will probably see it go another 500k trouble free. You will have time to spare as well while the head is off being done. It's not very expensive the bearings are cheap, I can't remember exactly but around $60 sounds right. The rings add up a little due to the fact there is a few (3 on each piston if I remember correctly) and as for honing grab the "bottle brush" style they do a better job and are easier to use.
With the head. I would be getting it skimmed, crack tested, valve grind, valve stem seals and new pre comb chambers. You should easily be able to stay under 1k. And only use genuine head gaskets.

If you hone the bores, you must wash them out with soapy water until spotless!!

Cheers guys. Just a small dribble of coolent when cold from the front intake side. I don't think its internal as it runs fine, no white smoke or any signs.
But I mean a real little leak.. maybe 100mls a month..

It could be the thermostat housing. They seal in quite a few places. But in saying that if you do the head these seals will get changed anyway.
