Ok so I have a 2000 model td42t but it's getting on, I'm thinking of buying a series 8 which is 3ltr.
Is the current 3ltr good on fuel? Also I tow a camper so I'm a little worried about going to a smaller motor

Why not look at the GU4 with the 4.2TDi in it? Going by the Nissan specs the 3ltr has more power than the 4.2. Some can correct me if I am wrong but most go with the 4.2 for their reliability.

3lts easy to drive in Auto Guise, not my choice for off road having to keep it on boost to get anywhere
Tends to be too quick for slow off road stuff IMO. Fuel the later Cr get around 13-15lt/100k.
they keep up with the traffic ok, tow nearly anything. throw a hair dryer on the 4.2
No looking back then. big strong motor getting maybe 14-15 lt/100 pushed

if theres nothing wrong with your rig it would be cheaper to rebuild and turbo what you already have then updating and moving everything across

X2 with rebuild.. you have the best of the best. Why change. If your keen you can rebuild for $2500-3000.. kits vary from $1500-2500.
But the 4.2's are sleve bores. Knock out knock in job. You'll need a machinist to skim the top of the sleeves to the block as they'd are made to sit slightly proud, and a quick hone to ensure everything is round..
Easy..

The 4.2 has a factory turbo and according to my gauge it boosts to 9psi
Doesn't blow any smoke, but chews the fuel. Pump n injectors were reco'd about 45k ago. I'm just a bit disappointed I guess hence the thoughts of a newby...

I'll confuse the issue by saying that I am happy with my CRD.....

would I go back to an old 4.2.......yes cause I loved my old one, but it would need to be heavily modified and worked to come up on a level pegging for me and my uses ....

If my 3ltr sounded like a 4.2 I would keep it forever.

I tapped that app...

Mate I say keep the 4.2 and get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing!!! On a dyno for best results.. My Troll gets around 13-14L that's with 285s and all the accessories on it! she be pretty heavy!!

Yeah. Keep the 4.2. I have a larger turbo on pushing 23psi and towing nearly 3T can still get 17/100.

If your after more power you can get the turbo double hi flowed so its pushing 19psi and then more extreme get the pump modified and your pushing some serious horse power then.

My current 3L CRD, with all the extras and bigger tyres sits on 13.3lph going by the odometer - not corrected

You need to go and drive one to see if it is for you
