Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone out there can offer some advice on the following:

On my Y60, I had a distinct knock when i change direction on the steering wheel at standstill. After checking underneath it seemed to come from the panhard rod on the axle end. I pushed some grease into it and the noise went. Assuming it was a worn bush I ordered a new set and fitted them. The noise is back??? The bushes each fit onto a different size pin, and i noticed the larger of the two pins (the problem end) seems a bit tapered?? When you slide the bush onto it it fits snugly around the wider base of the pin, but there is play near the top? Is this pin meant to be tapered or is this from wear? It looks too uniform to be wear but I could well be wrong....Just seems odd that the bush is not tapered in that case as well?

If it is the pin that is worn I guess it will be a case of cutting it off and welding a new one on? First time I have replaced a bush to make a noise come back!!!

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Jamie

Doubt that the pin would be worn. If my memory serves me, I'm pretty sure that the thread of the pin actually ends within the bush, so when you torque the nut, it compresses the steel tube in the bush firmly onto the diff, so shouldnt be any movement here. If that makes sense?

Just a thought, is the dished washer placed on so the concave is toward the nut as it makes a difference.

Found some pics that might help explain. You can see in the pic the thread down into the bush, with the washer on and nut, there won't be any movement.
Another pic to show what mudnut mentioned.

Many Thanks guys, this makes sense. Washer is on the right way round...So guess i need to check elsewhere to see where that noise is coming from!! I really thought that was it!. Will have a look later and let you know what I discover. Thanks for the photos, and the effort!

Cheers,

Jamie

I reckon it will be teh Tie Rod end on the passenger end of the Drag link mate. very close proximity to that bush (a hands width away)

Or i would then be checking the tie rod ends on the tie rod to.

Gotcha! Tie rod ends were just replaced so wasnt them either. One of the radius arm bushes on that side had gone. So the noise was the side of the arm touching the shackle when you turn the wheel. Bush looked fine from one side (of course the side I happened to look from!!!), but had seperated from the metal casing on the other side! Many thanks all...
