View Full Version : GU Centre console switches. What fits three?

So the GU's have a mounting plate for three switches. I plan to use one for my reverse light spottie and the other two for when I eventually get the air locker. But the Carling style switches you can only fit two as they are slightly too big for three. So the middle hole gets left out.
Any idea's on what decent looking switches fit?
Also I would like to get a on/off/on rocker for the reverse light so I can use it as on : when I want it on, off : for off and on : for when I select reverse it comes on. If possible.
The carling style switches looking nice but as mentioned they are just too big.

Cheers.

Are you talking about the plate that runs down the left side of the console? Where a left hand drive hand brake would be?

If so then when you take the console out to a VESA the panel and run your wires you will find you can I clip that panel. Remove it and go to a plastic Place and buy a new strip of black plastics and cut new holes for 3 carling switches ;)

You could try and grind the top and bottom slots so the switches are spread further away from each other to give the middle switch more room??

Yeah that might work, from memory doesn't need much

What tha!....Sry, a few reds and my train of thought is gone down the pooper...
Also I didn't really want to hear that mate. I CBF'ed finding a plastics place and bothering them with this. But that looks like what I'm gonna have to do. The missus is gonna hate me more now. Spending more time in the garage than with her... :)
Aw well. Ya gotta take the good with the bad hey...

Bloody iPhone predictive script!!!

I have no idea what I wrote that would cause VESA???? So when you take out the centre console to run the wiring for your switches then just unclip the panel (2 screws) and buy a piece of plastic, MDF, whatever, paint it ;)

Easy as mate.

Hmm I give it a go. I thought about grinding out the slots as George suggested but then the switches will be lose in the slots so that thought went in the bin...Now I just gotta find a plastics supplier in my area...

If you draw what you want including the hole sizes they might even make the panel for you and post it too you.

Thanks MR. I was going to see Plasticut in Campbellfield could do something. I was kinda hoping I could make this work without the headache of this but if I want it right, this must be the way I think...

Hey Darren how do you think I should run the rear light too? I was going to just run it independently on an on/off rocker, but then I though I should run it via a 3 way switch, through independant and via reverse lights...

I found the reverse light power in the rear right quarter and spliced in there. I went from there to a relay for a bigger reverse spot light and doubled up to the supply pin on the relay from a switch in the dash. Obviously the switch needs a supply too.

When I bought my carling switches from Custom Rocker the BEST thing I did was choose a different colour light for the roof light switch! In the dark on a night drive knowing that the red light is the roof light switch is great when there are 7 blue switches!! ;)

Hmm. So did you use just an on/ off switch? I am trying to get my head how you have wired it in. i'll get there, eventually.

Yep just a standard on off switch

Easy as mate.

So I assume you have the splice for the relay off the reverse light?? Easy bit.

On a Carling switch it goes like this.

2 switches 3
7 & 8 are earth
And 6 is the dash lights.

So power from the battery via a fuse to 2
3 goes to the same power pin on the rear relay as the supply from the reverse circuit.

An Earth to 7 and bridge to 8

Grab the dash light circuit and go to pin 6

When you switch the light on from the switch your rear light and reverse lights light up.

Easy as. ;)

All I have done so far is run a wire from the light down to the front. Having done anymore yet until I know which way to go about it.

I take it you then have two wires running down to the front? One from the light itself and one picked up from the reverse wire?

Edit : No I don't. I tee into the reverse wire at the back. Then split that wire down the front and goto pins 86 AND 87 in the relay...
Gettin' there.
Hmm so from the relay pin 86 I'd go to pin 3 on the switch and pin 2 to the battery WITH the battery supply for the relay? I tink I got it...

No that helps a lot. I have it wrong then. I need to run two wires from the back then. Great pic mate. Thank you. Will have another crack tomorrow maybe. I am still waiting for my switch to turn up. So I was just running the wires to the console and labeling them...

Is that for a 5 pin rocker switch? Or 3 pin?

5 pin ARB style Carling switch. I have read that some carling switches are different so make sure but that works for ARB carlings.

How do you remove the blanking panels for switches (the one under the a/c panel) without damaging them? Have tried today but got a little frustrated and gave up!

mudski

There is no switches under the a/c panel. Just a ciggie socket. The panel in the centre console hss screws behind it. Yoy need to remove the whole console to do this.

I tapped that app...

To the left of the ciggy sockets ahi have the sub tank switch and the rear a/c switch. I have a GU 7 if that matters.

You need to remove the gear stick surround. Screw under the ashtray. Once removed there a two screws for you to undo and the whole panel will come out easily
