The family car (vt wagon) is slowly dieing a slow death and becoming a money pit.

My misses cannot drive manual!

Purely used for a soccer mum car so after a stock gq gu patrol.

Only issue would be a budget of 10k unfortunately.

What would you look for?

I'm dreaming if I was to find an auto td42 so for that budget and considering it will only be used for shopping and seeing friends what would you look for?

Trying to possibly find an immaculate stock gq tb42 maybe ti for luxuries but just not sure if a gu would be achievable...Added safety of a gu would be nice though!

She doesn't drive much so fuel consumption not a "huge" concern but I'm getting lost now.

Or should we just get a more reliable bommodore????

I can just see another 3k needed on the vt this year so thinking of options...

How is only having 10g to spend an issue!!!, I wish I has 10g to spend on a new / secondhand car

There is nothing luxury about a TI, just get an DX or ST and stick with a GQ *L* Buy poo bears and teach the missus how to drive manual or convert it to Auto

hmm.... if you get her into a nice patrol then further down the track when its time to "upgrade" then you get that nicer patrol and all your hard fought for accesories will bolt straight up:)!

I second what Toddie said! LMAO buy it and spend the extra money making it luxurious for her!

But to be honest why are you even looking at a Patrol? I'd get a late model buzz box if it were me.

we all know manual is easy. The hard part is making them see that lol. I have two autos; my trol and my vt. My girlfriend calls me week because she's only ever had manuals lol and she revs em!

heres a nice one just out of your price range:

Thanks guys. Two reasons why I want a patrol...

1) my area and our friends areas all dirt roads and a couple of friends houses are on long corrugated and bumpy dirt roads. The vt bushes, shocks, etc are already screwed and needs to be a 4wd. That's very tempting bob I won't lie but that would just get trashed with the roads we drive on around here.

2) would be nice to be a patrol to ride costs off in the future as this next car will be a keeper.

Thanks for the offer bob, for 5k that would be ideal but unfortunately not practical for where this car will be used.

I like the idea the thinking from Plas on this one....something like an Xtrail, Forrester or Rav......
Something like that would be nicer for the missus to drive, handle the dirt roads and be better on the blacktop.

It went against the grain being someone who has always liked big relaxed motors, but based on our neighbours experience with a small lightweight buzz bomb (Suzuki Ignis) used regularly on many rough roads & now with over 350,000kms on it, & still reliable we decided to buy a buzz bomb for my wife to use & to keep fuel costs down. 10kms of often rough, potholed & corrugated steep & winding logging road to get to our place. We bought a city used front wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage with 80,000kms for $5k. Wife drives a 70+km round trip 5 days a week, including our 20kms of dusty or muddy rough dirt road. Apart from some body parts replaced after an altercation with a wallaby, 10,000kms oil & filter changes & 100,000km timing belt replacement it hasn't had anything replaced & has now done 131,000. Still on the original shocks, springs etc which continue to work well. No rattles or noises. We have been pretty surprised & impressed that a vehicle so far out of it's supposed comfort zone has managed so well. I put it down to it's light weight. It also handles pretty well on the blacktop too, (shares front end with the Lancer) & is quite good fun to thrash the arse of! Not specifically suggesting a Mirage, but maybe a lightweight, frugal on fuel, buzz box is worth considering?
