Gday,

I noticed a wet patch under the car this morning and did some investigation and found a coolant leak (see pic).:frown:

I looks like either a leak from the hose above, the drain plug or the seal where it attaches to the engine.

The car has done 46,000klm and was wondering two things.

1. while I've got her apart I'll replace the coolant but should I replace the hose as well while I'm at it ? (I don't know the expected life of a radiator hose)

2. Can I add a little water for the next couple of days till I can get it done ?

See if you can find the leak the hose maybe perished so replace both just add water till you get it changed
while its down why not flush it at the same time inside and out

Hoses might not be covered??? Don't they exclude certain things???

Geeze, that's a baby... I thought they came with 5 years, if its under (may and onwards) I'd be asking the question. Can't hurt.

Yup, no signs of coolant from either hose but definitely green around the thermostat on the passenger side.

Could be the gasket on the thermostat housing, or (hopefully not) have you checked further up like the head.

Only 3 years warranty so that won't help! Hoses perish with age as well as use so after 5 years not uncommon for a hose, thermostat, etc to give in. I would replace all the parts that haven't been replaced up to the 5 year service related to the cooling system (if money permits). Remember - don't mix coolants either! So if you don't know what was in it flush it properly and replace.

No warranty and was a little bigger than I thought. Leaking gasket behind the water pump/timing cover. 2k later, no leak.

Feeling a little tender at the moment :( :)

Yeah I'm wondering if the previous owners overfilled the coolant because the expansion tank was always chockas even when cold and the reservoir was at the top mark.

Maybe it was a time thing rather than mileage.

Dunno but it's done and I feel full and relieved that it wasn't worse

I got the same problem - hopefully will not be as bad what I am thinking - What are the actual parts been replaced? and can you please break down the 2K cost?

I'll hunt down the invoice, just keep in mind mine is a common rail.

I have a non crd and mine has done the same thing, I was quoted about 1400 but I work at Nissan so I get discount labour, winning!!!! But I have a quote you can look at if you like, ill tell you now it's approx 15-16 hrs labour though as half the engine has to be disassembled

Is this a common problem? And you guys know how it starts?

I wouldn't say common, in 12 months I've seen 1 come into work to have the seal replaced. But it will happen eventually so be prepared for it. My troll has done 400,000 between 3 engines and this is the first time it's happened to my knowledge. If it starts using coolant and oil that'd be the first place I'd look IMO.
