im heading over to perth in october from bendigo vic, our trip will be mostly tarmac and sand!
im undecided weather or not its worth goin back to 265/75/16 road tyres? or just stayin with my 285/75/16 mtz's!

fuel consumption is my concern! i have the oppurtunity to buy a cheap set of 265's. would it be worth it?

cheers denis

I would look at it this way.......... Say five road tyres cost $1000. Would you use an extra $1000 in fuel by staying on muddies?

Don't stroke it, TAP it!!!!.....

i bought a set of 5 second hand tyres on ebay last night, 2 cooper strs and 3 bridgestone desert duellers all with an average of 5mm left! for $50, :) my mtz's have bout 8mm left! i reckon that it will be worth it, in the long run with road noise and fuel consumption!

You will be way better off with the 265s. The rolling resistance (hysteresis) will be less with the 265s more because of the contact patch (it's wider) rather than the overall diameter of the tyre.

I changed from 265s to 285s and two things became obvious:
I could clearly feel the vehicle was harder to move off. Not noticeable now as I have got used to it.
Fuel consumption increased on a recent 2500 km trip (by a bit under 10% - significant).

Note that 265s are specified by the manufacturer.

I'm about to head to Broome in a couple of weeks and need to replace the tyres. I never thought about the difference in fuel consumption.
Thanks.
