Hello fellow forumeers,
Been pricing up tyres for the patrol as I need to replace them before next rego inspection, Got some prices today on some Kumho KL78 a/ts theres $10 difference between the 265/75/16 and the 285/75/16
If I can I'd rather go the bigger size, I plan to go to a 2" lift down the track but would rather get the bigger tyres now if I can fit them, I'd expect scrubbing on full lock which doesn't bother me too much as long as height will be ok.
Would really appreciate some opinions on this.
Kind regards,
Eric.

285's will go easy mate. They aren't as wide as a 33x12.5 and if your getting a 2" lift they will be well suited.

G'day Eric,
As recommended by Matt. I have 285/75/16 on my Patrol and you are welcome to have a look at mine. PM with your contact phone number so we can meet.

I ran 285s on STD rims before my 2" lift no issues at all.
Now I run 305s on a 2nd set

Thanks for the replies, just wanted to make sure they would be ok in the interim until I get the lift kit, funds are tight at the moment otherwise I would do the lift as well.
Cheers,
Eric.

285/75r16 are about 31.8inches in diameter and 11.6 wide.
315/70r16 are 33.2inches in diameter and 12.2 wide.
I would opt for the 315, they are a much better tyre.

Also those tyres will fit without a lift but you will most likely need to remove the front mud flaps. What type of lift are you wanting to run?

Cheers for that, just a 2" lift in 6 months or so.

I differ with your conversion
My memory says 285s are same as 33s but only 11.5 in
305s a tad bigger than 33s but wider at 12.5
315 were 34.5 and as you stated will rip front mudflaps off without a lift.
No biggy but maybe someone else could confirm
Pic is 305s /2" lift
Mags are 285s @ 2" lift
305 is width in mm 70 is % of width {Aspect ratio} for sidewall and 16 is rim size
so 285 is width in mm 75 is % of width{aspect ratio} for sidewall and again 16 is rim size

Here are some calculations from imperial to metric. The 25.4 represents mm in an inch.
33/12.5r16 tyre.
12.5x25.4 = 317.5
(33-16)/2 = 8.5
8.5/12.5 = 0.68
Now round those answers to the nearest tyre size.
317.5 to 315
0.68 to 70
So it ends up being.
315/70r16
Now we will do a 35 inch tyre.
35/12.5r16 tyre.
12.5x25.4 = 317.5
(35-16)/2 = 9.5
9.5/12.5 = 0.76
317.5 to 315
0.76 to 75
315/75r16

I work it out differently,
75% of 285mm = 213.75
16" = 406.4mm
406.4+ (213.75x2)= 833.9
833.9/25.4= 32.83"
So theoretically close enough to a 33"

No need to debate o. How to convert Tyre sizes, just Jean on over to the Tyre conversion thread, there's a few links to sites and a good spreadsheet

Put in 13mm spacers to move front wheels forward to stop scrubbing on full lock

Just one thing id like to bring up, is that different tyre manufactures tyres can be the same "stamped" official size, but in reality (using a tape measure) they are way different.
This just cost me a lot of money when buying KM2s based on BFGs listed sizes, (instead of looking at the tyres in person), their sizes are no where near accurate, i have BFG A/Ts in a 265/75/16, but the exact same size in a BFG KM2, is about 20mm smaller across the tread.
My 305/70/16 are narrow too, about 285mm across the tread, and are only about 10mm wider than my BFG A/T 265s, not sure why they are so far apart, but it makes it damb hard to choose the right tyre !

I run Cooper ST 285/75/16 with a 2 inch suspension lift. No problems at all. It's a perfect match. Wider tyres will adversely affect your fuel economy, rolling resistance, road noise, staking susceptibility, turning circle, legality, and hip pocket nerve but will improve your macho-ness. :)

Yeah I agree with the sizes being different between brands. My 33" bighorns measured the same as some 35" tires

Considering that 285/75r16 is 32.83" tall and 11.22" wide and 305/70r16 is 32.81"tall and 12.01" wide, what would be the best option just as a play tyre??
I really like the way TD's wheels fill out his guards!!

285 is more common but I'd rather 305s

I have305 70r 16's (cooper stt) on a 2 inch lift... I get rubbing but mainly on the inside do to offset, I plan to change the rims to bring them out a bit and go a 4 inch lift

I was told on the weekend by MR that a neg 22 is perfect for the 285's what offset would you need for the 305's ???
Winnie
16th April 2013, 02:50 PM
I think you'd get away with -22 on 305s as well? Might possibly need a lift. My mate as 2" lift running 35x12.5 Claws on - 22 rims with no scrubbing.

Yeh but Cris for now i'll just get wheels and tyres and leave it stock height till i figure out what i'm going to do with the motor, theres no point doing a lift if i have to change the spring rate after the conversion and front bar, yeh ???

have you considered the poly spacers? i run 285 on my GU with no issues, but it seems like a quick cheap option to 30mm of lift without having to change anything else
Alitis007
16th April 2013, 03:41 PM
The problem with the spacers will be the fact that shocker wont have the travel that will be needed with they extra 30mm, even tho it doesn't sound like much it will more then likely shorten the life of the shocker and for the sake of saving a dollar i'd rather do it right the first time with a money is not an option type of attitude. For now i'm just toying with the idea of a second set of wheels that will get only used for play time!

Silverstone MT117 Extremes. Great in mud, lousy everywhere else just about. Pretty good on rocks though but make sure you air down or you will lose lugs! I wouldn't buy them again even as a weekend tyre, they are too extreme. I reckon next time I'll go with Federals like AB and Healy run.

with all your talk about larger tyres, just remember your wheel bearings will be under more load ,its a good idea to keep an eye on them insure that they tight with no free play,in saying this i am not knocking bigger tyres i have been running 35`s for 12months on my gu with no lift just had to remove front mudflaps.
cheers neil
Alitis007
19th April 2013, 12:12 PM
Neil you only chop out bearing with ridiculess offsets and deep dishes where the load from the tyre is pushing the bearing off the straight position for eg -30 offset with a 3" deep dish it puts load to the top of the bearing

Going out today so hopefully can have a bit of a go and test them out, they rate them as a 70/30 but those centre voids are quite large, I have fairly large hands and I can fit my thumb in there quite loosely.
Cheers,
Eric.

Yep took them out last Sunday and was very happy with them! Some of the tracks were quite slippery up hills with ruts etc, I had no problems at all loved every minute of it!!!
So far extremely happy with them, My car raised 30mm with them on as opposed to the old 31's :) Its lucky I took those pictures too cos after we were out they were muddy and dirty :D
