Just cooked the TD42 and almost 100% the head is stuffed, about to take it off. Being that it ran out of water I reckon the rings will be in bad shape as well so I might as well throw a new set at it while the head is off.
Looking at purchasing a FlexHone (Ball Hone) to give it a tickle before putting new rings in.
With a 96mm bore I assume the 4 inch one would be the choice but grit size is what I need help with.
Also, other than all the top end gaskets will rings big ends and a sump gasket be enough if doing in car? Or is there something I'm missing??

i think you can buy a full td42 rebuild kit on ebay for about $1500 i think that includes piston and rings seen it once a little while ago though..
Good luck with the rebuild or heart transplant whichever way you go

So its finally all over and I have my truck now purring along again. She now uses less fuel and feels more powerful!!
Motor ended up being quite badly damaged!!! Head cracked in 5 places Block cracked in number 3 pot. After $8500 and a couple of weekends work I'm very happy with the results.
$8500 bought me: Fuel Pump Rebuild + Boost Top Mod, Injectors renewed, New Gen. Nissan TD42 Block with liners, New Gen. Nissan TD42 Head, New Genuine Pistons, Crank Grind, Billet Cam & Engine kit.
I screwed it together myself so I know whats in there!! I'm actually quite surprised what $8500 got me!!

Even with all the machining? That's not to bad considering what he used plus all the other parts he hasn't listed to complete the job.

Youre right, there are things I haven't listed. Like bearings, new clutch and f/wheel mach, oils and filters (a couple a doses of them!!), new hoses, a new radiator, new belts, air cleaners, crane and engine stand hire, about 3 cases of beer..... And I'm sure I've still missed stuff in the list which I did. No use doing a job unless its done well!!
