Hey all,
Tried a search but couldn't come up with what I was looking for, What does everyone use on their flares to keep them schmick and black?
I got my car detailed a few months back and they used some sort of silicon spray as they came up black, but after a while with the rain etc I had all these run lines down the car from where the silicon had washed off!
Mine are fairly faded and abit white in areas, Gimme some ideas on how to revitalise them :D
Cheers,
Eric.

Close range with a water blaster, then heat with a heat gun should get a lot of colour back for you.
What i did with mine was paint them with cheap satin black paint, lasted very well looked great.
Ive bought new flares for my car now, but before i put them on im spraying them with bumper coat, its like a matt texture finish like the flares are from factory, looks clean and neat and is easy to spray compared to anything ive used.
Give me 5 min and ill get you a pic of something ive painted in it.
If you want to see the flares painted in satin paint, look in my 04off pics thread, every pic of my car was taken long "after" the flares got painted when i first bought the car.

Never use Car Polish...they will go all white and it is really hard, i.e read nearly impossible to remove.

Heat gun works really well as it brings them back to black but it isn't always convenient and it is time consuming, so I just used to Armorall them, and I did it when I did the interior.

I have a heat gun here at home, so am I looking to get it to a certain temperature or will I be able to visibly see when it's right as the colour will come back?

Can I just say you blokes are making a strong case for the gq owners as to the toughest patrol. The correct answer is go for a bush run in a tight track get some bush pin striping its the best thing about the gu guards that and we don't need to put on rubber skirts to fit 33 or 35 tyres

Thats a straight out lie!!
The rubber flares are to stop the mud roosting up the side of the vehicle. Have you ever driven in mud? Everyone I know that owns a GU has put rubber flares on.....

You should start to see the plastic go darker, but this is when the plastic is on the edge of melting, so take caution, wave the heat gun over the area and do not stop in one spot, it does not "always" work so you need to try not burn the flare just waiting to see it go dark.
Best to try underside of the flare behind the mudflap (where you dont see) as a test first if you are not sure.
This fix will not last, and the flares will still go white again after a couple of months in the sun, that is why i painted mine.

My flares had the whiteness before painting, once painted i never had to do anything to them again, i hit them heaps with high pressure water after mud, sand, and everything else a fourby that gets used see's.

K-Mart tyre shine $4 a tin works a treat, my rear bumper was grey
but now all those black plastic bits are a nice matt black finish.
Highly recommend, makes tyre look shmick too

Arnt most plastics oil based. And the sun is just taking the oil out of the plastic?
Maybe just rub motor oil back into the plastic. Should absorb it the same as tyre cleaner?

I think the detailer used something like that, but after a month or so, the rain started washing it off, and all the black parts that were nice and shiny started showing streaks down the paintjob from them in darkish lines......

Dosen't matter what product you use, paint is the only thing you wont have to continuously re-apply ! :)

I used to use tyre shine but you continuously need to apply it every week for the dark black look.
I painted the flares but now they just look worse because the paint scrapes off when I take the car in the bush.
Of coarse I could justbrespray them but, what's the point. I will scratch them again the next weekend. Lol

Agree with macca 86. shiny looks pretty.
I have white flares with rubber flexies to cover the tyre width on my GU IV. I have plenty of scratches from narrow tracks & they show up clearly every wash.
SO Easy aerosol, white with red lid works VERY well.
I use it on tyres, door trim, flares and everything else you want a shine on.
It stays shiny for a decent time compared to other products I've tried since about 2001.

I have been using tire shine for years but the best product you can use is from meguiars (gold class trim detailer) lasts longer than any other and thats including mothers. once my back steel bar and RS are fitted I will be respraying them though, had enough of every month having to detail for an hour or so. wasnt too bad when i had a car but now its twice as big and i am twice as old lol
