Hey, I am looking for ideas on getting some extra horsepower out of a 2.8 petrol in an 83 Shorty

Firstly get the engine checked out for overall condition ....
It could maybe need a reco,(old engine,maybe tired )so spending money on hipo bits wont be any better than a reco ...
These are the same engines in the Nissan Z cars, so anything that can be done to these in the Z cars can be done to the patrol donks
Z cars had twin carbs,EFI and turbo from factory,even electric dizzy
Throw extractors,bigger pipes ,better plugs,decent leads,larger carb maybe
Depends on your wallet

My brother had extractors on his Shorty and his went OK.

It definitely had better pickup than my LWB, but I don't know how much to attribute to the extractors and how much to the fact that was missing a lump of metal in the middle.

microtec, coil pack ignition , z18et injectors, ef falcon throttle body , stainless steel tunnel ram and plenum on old std l20b , it was mental!!!!

Cheers mate, shes had a full top end rebuild, extractors etc done.
would you happen to have any idea where the best place to go for bits for the z cars?

Have a look on the datsun ZX forums - some good info.

You can try :- Eletronic ignition, carby upgardes etc have a look at this web site Nerok.info

I ended up put a RB30 in my MK - lot of work though
