View Full Version : Suggestion for a new forum

AB and moderators
I would appreciate some feedback on this idea for a forum or sub forum.
I belong to an American motorbike forum which in ways is very similar to this one with many similarities in personalities. They have a sub forum called the hotbox and you have to apply to gain access to it, therefore it keeps those that are easily offended safely away. It still gets moderated but the rules are relaxed up a little. Is it worth trialling?
Cheers

Ive actually thought about this before, a section that only "Forum Sponsors" can see which is a bit more relaxed in "some" ways.

However, I never went ahead with it as I never wanted this forum to turn into a place where people could abuse each other, not that it would be like that but the targeted audience for this website is males aged 20-40 so a separate private section was thought of for blokes to talk blokey things I guess....lol

Ah kinda like a "Pub" sub section on another forum I'm a member of. The only rule they have is what is said in the pub, stays in the pub. Good idea but people will still get their back up out of the sub forum and it will carry into the family forum. Very hard one to moderate I would think.

Need a NSFW sub section IMO. Where bewbs can be seen :)

I do not think that it would be such a good idea, as it will have to be moderated the same as the current one done to the fact that we will still get families viewing it as well.
It always great to see suggestions on how to improve our forum coming though.

If set up correctly, no one can see it unless they request to join it, so it becomes family safe.

Is this site safe from dodgy links? If so then adding another sub forum should not be a problem. Not trying to be smart, just chasing solutions.

Seriously,

I'm quite happy to leave the Forum as it is.

AB and the moderators are providing a 'free service' to the NP community, and we should respect the unpaid voluntary hours they commit - daily - to making it as FF as possible.

Well done, people.

It would be optional to subscribe to, keeping it in the sub forum and not allowing it to spill out to family friendly is the trick. Those not up to the heat of debate don't have to enter. A bit like tv, switch channels if you don't like it.

Agreed, they do a thankless great job. But, we are only talking about a sub forum, moderated with a few less rules that you have to subscribe to, in order to see or discuss anything. Regardless, AB is the boss and I'm happy to follow his rules.

What is the point? It will only subtract from the main general forum with more swearing. Why?

The more I think about it the more I am turning away from the idea. If you want a debate, head over to the other forum. There always debates going on there. Maybe we should just have a sub forum link to the "other side", if you feel up for an argument.

I'm not disagreeing and respect your point of view. I know that volunteering does become an expectation, in many cases. I'm sure life is full on for AB and many, if not all, of the mods.

To me it's another job AB or a moderator has to do. Sorry to say that, but I've been there and done that.

You can share my campfire anytime, too.

Have to agree.

Basically sounds like setting up a section just to argue in. If two people disagree on something does one of them then say "ok lets settle this in the hot box section where we can swear at each other"?
There's so many places on the net where you can easily have a slinging match, look at p0rn or be rude and crude. In my opinion this forum doesn't need it. I'm in no way offended by any of the above but I don't think it needs to be on this forum in particular.

'If it ain't broke don't fix it' is what comes to mind for me. I don't know quite how a separate 'less moderated' section might impact on the rest of the forum, but I do think it is a possibility that it could. It is often said around here that this forum stands out from the rest & I agree that it is a far better forum than many, & wouldn't want to see this put at risk in order for folks to be able to 'kick up' a bit.

I quite enjoy a 'robust discussion' & see no reason why this cannot occur on the forum as it is, provided said robust discussion remains respectful & focuses on the issue being discussed & not on the individuals doing the discussing.

OK i have just read this thread in one sitting as it is laid out over the 6 pages.

I have thanked those that made the most sense along the way.

I simply see no reason why we would need a Sub Forum for a "Pub Like" discussion. Our members get along very well. if there is an issue then it goes into a pm and these pages are left alone while that happens. The Chat feature in this forum is rarely used and i dont see the point. As it stands every thread is a Chat thread for this lot anyway so why on earth would we want a Closed Doors section.

The Mods have a Closed Door section and even we rarely use it. occasionally we need to discuss something and it is just easier than a group pm.

It seems that what your actually chasing is a Relaxed rules area?? Well the Rules are simple and a Fundamental for this forum and probably why this is such a great place with a Great bunch of guys.

A Sub Section as you describe would be a Floor in our Forum rather than a Feature and i just cant see why we would want to Reinvent the wheel when it is doing so well.

As it stands our members behave very well and there is little need to Moderate as it were. But sometimes for the good of the threadd and or forum we need to step in and have a quiet word. NOT VERY OFTEN.

This is a Great Place just the way it is i reckon. ;)

It's not a case of being out numbered mate it's just a case of what works for this forum and why people come back to it on a daily basis.

As I've said before, there are other threads that we can run amuck in, with out the need for a sub forum. Yes we still adhere to the forum rules but maybe test the boundaries from time to time.

I like your idea an in no way knocking it, just don't think it's required.

I'm more of an "onlooker" than a participant. Don't seem to find the time some of you muster up, but I still like to drop by when I can. Mostly just enjoy reading the banter and make a mental note of some of those special ideas that I'll come back to and find with the search one day.

Obviously found the forum on google looking for something specific, but it was the fam friendly or maybe just plain friendly attitude that made me think of hanging around. I like that it's not just loud and crude, but can still be a lot of fun.

There must be many others like me that hang around the edges for the same reason. It's still good to think about "why?", but leave it like it is I reckon.

On another forum of which I am an ADMIN on, we did have a Closed Chat Section, just for members, as being a public forum just like this one, needed to be closed off.
It worked well for sometime, but started to get out of hand and Moderation of that section was becoming constant as constant breach's of our ToU's were happening. With that, we as Admin were not keeping up with the moderation of the overall Forum and so we decided to close down that part of the forum.
That was a hard decision and some of the usual members chucked a wobbly, but to be honest, it has now been a year down the track that we closed off that section and the overal forum is a much better place for everyone concerned and now runnin gmuch smoother. We Admin have just over 12800 members in our forum and is growing at an average rate at the moment of 8 new members per day.

A seperate section is worth looking at, but very strict ToU's would need to be put in place and enforced, to try and keep the peace. Also you need to think about the Administrators extra work load.
What the Admin here could do is get a couple of Moderators (dedicated members) set up to just look after it for them.

Now, where did those grey hairs go this time..... Good luck......
