Hi all

Thought if chuck up some photos of my patrol. Bought it about 4 months ago with close to 400000 on the clock. Ran rough and needed abit of love but abit of work and it runs and drives beautifully.
My last car was a ba xr8 ute, but my wife is pregnant with our 2nd and I just need more room so the ute is gone. Must admit, I much prefer the patrol.
I can drive it all day and on driving to work through city traffic will average 15l per 100. Better on highway.
Have chucked new engine mounts, gearbox mounts, new radiator, hoses, fan belts, all lights replaced with led bar the headlights, front radius arm bushes, rebuilt rear brakes, new braided brake lines, stripped and painted most of the chassis and rear diff, front diff still needs doing, new beefier lower control arms, return to center damper, tough dog panhards front and rear, new fuel pump, new raised springs and shocks and lots more that I can't remember.

Work still to be done:
Still need to paint the last rear quarter of the chassis, will pull the fuel tank out, strip it, paint and also treat it internally, put new hoses in.
Will replace all the carpets with new, new tie rod and drag link, put new rotors and brake pads in once I sort out the rear leaking diff. Have new injectors on there way ready to go in. Exhaust has seen better days so will be replacing. And the odd corroded nut and bolt will be replaced with a high tensile counterpart to avoid anymore stripped bolts...

Thought I'd post some recent jobs I've done in this thread to keep a record.
Recently had the intake manifold off to change a leaking gasket. Took me months to find this vacuum leak but now that it's fixed the patrol runs amazing. When I first bought it, the car was a nightmare to start. I'd have to crank it at least 3-5 times while feathering the throttle to try and start it. Now, half a second of cranking and it fires up instantly. It's returning amazing fuel economy now too. I'm getting as low as 13l per 100km on some trips which I'm quite pleased with.
Also had the fuel tank out, stripped, cleaned and painted. Stripped and cleaned and treated the rear chassis section also, just for peace of mind. Rust to me just doesn't settle right and I must have it gone! But once I got into it, was very pleased to find that it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had first thought. I've been replacing most nuts and bolts with high tensile bolts with a nice covering of anti sieze to aid any future removals. Anyway here's some pics of the jobs.
Intake off the tb42e.

Appears the same on the othersise also. Possibly how they've manufactured the chassis.

I wouldn't bother. It might have been added as a means of strengthening that section, I'm not really sure. But every gq I've seen has the exact same markings, showing that it's consistent. Hard to have consistent stress lines on a multitude of gq's.

Not the best photo but fitted a snorkel. Bought a hole saw just for it but never ended up using it. Ended up stitch drilling the hole in the side panel and filed it smooth and to the correct shape. About 5 hours worth of trial and error fitting. But it's in and I'm happy with the result. When people fit a snorkel, does the drain hole in the air box get blocked off?

Haven't had much luck with the eBay alloy radiators, have killed 2 in the last 6 months so I've gone with an adrad copper/brass unit. Not sure if they died because of stray currents so I've purchased an analogue multi meter to test the system. Digital multimeters are no good for this test, but basically it's a matter of pulling the radiator cap off, negative probe onto the negative battery terminal and positive probe into the filler neck so it contacts the coolant but not any metallic parts, ie the filler neck. Shouldn't register a voltage of 0.05v or more, otherwise the radiator will have a shortened life span. Done with the engine running and all electrical items on, such as hazards, lights, radios. Etc. If a voltage of 0.05v or more is registered, turning off each electrical item one at a time may isolate the problem and get sorted from there. Just waiting for the multimeter to arrive so I can get to the bottom of this.

Here's the new radiator(again but an adrad one at least)

No pictures are correct. Only the rear rotors needed replacing so I changed these with the slotted rotors. The fronts are oe at the moment but I might change these shortly to the same rotors as when I did change the rears, braking performance had improved a lot. So they are recommended.

Lots done on the patrol lately. Might be doubling up here but I'll list the latest additions. Rear spring hats are now reinforced with the superior engineering kit, have installed remote central locking/alarm, new 9" spotlights, 50w led brake headlights, ditched the rtc damper and have just a regular damper now. Much better steering feel IMO. Catch can installed, oil cooler re-sealed, new copper/brass adrad radiator, body mounts replaced and lots more I can't remember.

Was alright, I did it in the shed while on jacks which made it harder. Access is quite tight and getting the bolts to start in the brace was interesting, but all successful in the end. But surprisingly, the brace does just slide into place, no body lift required. I honestly thought that I'd have to jack the body up. But all good.

But all completed now and I can't believe that I had no screws left over. Happy days! Was also a good opportunity to clean all the ducting and aircon/heater core.
The difference in sound level is night and day. Vast improvement over the old setup. Will stock up on more of this fatmat and do the rest of the truck.

What are you planning on rewiring BA? 2 days is optimistic I think, but not impossible. I think overall it took me a day and a half do what I just did. Wasn't too difficult, I think it looks worse than it is. Everything comes off in stages which makes it easier. It's just like a big macano set. If anyone has questions I'm happy to answer them.

Hey, Parksy, did you find anything around the passenger side pillar that could cause an annoying clunky clatter? I have had the glove box out and wedged foam in amongst the wiring connecters and air ducts, but it still persists. Is there a wiring loom and connecter inside the pillar?

Parksy
19th October 2013, 06:32 PM
Hey mudnut, what I've just found out is the actual dash assembly needs attention because it is a big source of noise. After all my efforts, there is still an annoying rattle which is coming from the dash, not behind it. I plan to install more fatmat to the inside of the dash to hopefully remove this noise, but I did manage to get rid of most annoying noises. But next time you're in your car, give the flat section of the dash a sharp hit with your clench fist. Hopefully this is the sound you're hearing, if not, you might have to remove the dash to find it. I noticed that the ducting mounts like to crack at the screw holes. Also on my gq ontop of the aircon radiator, there is an electrical plug that seems loose, even though it's connected. This made what seemed to be one of the annoying sounds when I wobbled it, so I just put a fillet of sealant around it to stop it vibrating.
Not sure if there's any wiring inside the pillar, would suck if there was. Could try and spray some penetrol inside the pillar to try and "glue" what ever might be inside to the wall?

Hope you get to the bottom of the sound mudnut.

Westy, hope you haven't bought any fatmat yet. I haven't had any dramas with it yet, but after doing the job, I've then decided to read reviews online and there aren't many fans of the stuff. Apparently it's an asphalt based product that will deteriorate after time and in heat tends to fall off. Apparently it's produced in the same factory that makes a product called peel and seal which is a roofing product that can be bought for very cheap at hardware stores. They've just printed a blue logo onto this stuff and raised the price. I'll let you know how this stuff holds up during summer, if I don't decide to rip it out and replace it with the "proper" butyl product such as dynamat extreme.

Have removed the dash again and removed the fatmat. Am very disappointed with this product. Have read posts of people using it in the US and in the heat the stuff just drips down the panels and becomes a horrible mess. Well I used a hair dryer to remove the stuff and sure enough it is not stable in heat what so ever. It just became a sticky gooey mess. But it's all gone now and am in the process of installing dynamat.
I took a photo of the dash assembly to show how it's constructed. It's basically a steel frame with padding on the top. The frame does vibrate and flex a lot when tapping it from the inside so I will be dynamating the inside of the dash.

All back together now. The difference is amazing! Feels like a different car infact. Gearbox and engine noise is a lot quieter, road noise is muffled and no heat transfer from the firewall into the cabin what so ever. Dashboard is solid as a rock aswell, very pleased with the results! The car feels even more solid and is very nice to drive! Still plan to dynamat the rest of the doors and get rid of the fatmat in the cargo section and dynamat it then chuck some acoustic liner ontop.

Great products and I highly recommend people do it to their patrols. The dashboard isn't hard to remove, if anyone wants some pointers I can help.

Yes please. Lol. But gotta do the rust repair first..

Parksy

Rust repair?

Dash removal is simple, it just seems daunting because lots of components gets removed. The trick is to label each component and keep the hardware with each item. But in a nutshell, the steering wheel is removed aswell as the covers, instrument panel and surround, center dash and radio, and the glove box. Then there are 13 screws that hold the dash onto the car. 2 on each end, 4 across the top close to the windscreen under the plastic caps, one under the instrument panel(which you will see when you remove the instrument panel and and 2 on each of the supports running down the middle of the dash(directly above the transmission tunnel).
There are a few components that will have to be removed or disconnected from the dash itself, the climate control panel will need to be removed by removing the fascia, then removing the 3 screws holding it to the dash. There's also a wire that runs from the climate controls to the airbox on the left which is secured to the dash with plastic clips, these need to be removed. There's a relay screwed to the dash in the middle of the dash on the right hand support(above the tranny tunnel). Either disconnect it electrically, or leave it connected and remove the one screw that holds it on. And that's about it, it's just a matter of pulling at the dash and it will come away and is easily removed by yourself. The only issue I had was manouvering it over the indicator and wiper stalks. But not impossible.

The ducting is very straight forward to remove, a couple of screws for each duct and they do come off in a specific order, but not hard to work out. The only duct I couldn't remove was the small one above the steering column, but it didn't get in the way anyway.

The climate controls need to be removed and disconnected at the ends of the wires, very simple. Just follow the wire to the end, unclip the metal clip, and the wire is freed. Then the actual controls are held on to the heater box with a screw.

Then the aircon/heater fan is held on with 3 nuts, just slides down(disconnect the electrical plug for the fan underneath). Don't disconnect the aircon condenser unless you want to regas it. But remove the nuts and the unit can be moved gently. The heater box is big and annoying but not impossible. Pop the bonnet and disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses, a small amount of coolant will dribble out. Then remove the 4 nuts holding it in place. There is also an electrical loom that runs across the unit which is held in place with a brace on the unit, just needs to be unscrewed and the loom can be moved away. The heater box can then be removed, but it's abit cumbersome trying to manouver it out because of the loom and the aircon box. Coolant will more than likely run out of the hoses as you move the unit, so have rags ready.

Feeling it now though. Anyway, head gasket seems to be in tact all way around, but the water passages are looking very blocked, so I'm guessing that the head has been cracked due to poor circulation.

I had a quick look at the underside of the head but couldn't see anything, is there any obvious points where they crack?
Either way I've got a replacement head on its way. Just hoping it is the head now that I've ordered one, and not something small like the oil cooler....:(

Then do not bother about rings...... still has good honing marks.

The only thing about doing the head while the engine is still in is you are going to hate the tightening procedure for the head.... faarrking hard!!!!!!!

Can do it with a good torque wrench but if you can get a degree wrench for the final tightening that would be more precise..

The rocker assembly felt a bit graunchy when moving the arms so I pulled it all apart, gave it all a clean and gave the bores and friction surfaces a light sand with 600grit. Nice and smooth now.

And the block all cleaned up. Used a scourer pad in the bores and removed most of the lines caused by the rings. I can barely feel the ridge now. It's got to be no more than a thou or two.

Did you order new head bolts.... I snapped one in the head re using old bolts... they are torque to yield so should not be used again.

I noticed that the water passages in the head gasket are very small and actually blocked in some cases on some of the cylinders. This was also the case with the gasket that was previously installed on the engine. Any risk in drilling out these holes and filing the holes so they actually match the head/block profile?

Grab a dermal and thin cutter.
Main aim is to keep all edges smooth and round.
So grab a course cutter and a fine one..
And go nuts opening them up a little.
I'd recommend no closer to the bore, but can go out a little

Built up the new head. New head, new valves, new valve seals, all assembled. Intake is bolted onto the head and will muscle the entire unit onto the block tomorrow and torque it down. Not keen on bolting the intake while the head is in the car so hopefully this is a good move...

Also modified the head gasket to ensure all coolant passages are open. For what ever reason, some of the passages were correct, some were merely little holes and some were non existent. Also sprayed the head gasket with permatex copper spray. Hopefully this combination will minimise any hot spots and any future head cracking.

Hey mate, the head gasket is cut like that so the water will circulate a certain way and by cutting out the holes it might affect how the water flows thru the motor to cool it down. Also the head gasket is made from a compound that releases itself to bond with the block and head when you tension the head down and that spray is normally used on layered steel or copper head gaskets so i'm not sure if it will effect how the head gasket seals.

Managed to easily remove the copper spray form the head gasket. It's quite tacky and a layer of glad wrap easily removed it all. As for the cooling passages, time will tell what the outcome is. But from driving it today, the temps on the ecu talk are exactly the same as before, so long as coolant is moving through the engine, I'm happy.
Anyway, managed to man handle this into place somehow, torqued down to spec, and ran through the last torque step a couple of times.

Thanks mate. I just ordered my compressor today and need to get a couple more bits and pieces before I start mine. Do you know how much paint it's roughly going to take to respray it?

Parksy
20th April 2014, 06:12 PM
Not sure Chris. When I was 17 I resprayed my swb series 3 landy and that took less than 4l. I've already done the bonnet and front quarters and have 4l of paint sitting here so hopefully it's enough. I've also got 2l of penetrol which makes 'more paint' and also helps the paint go on like glass.

Will give it a thorough wipe down with thinners tomorrow then it's turning black.

If you want to make sure its lined up pro pertly before you press tape up against panel then have rip it off. Instead leave the back film attached to tape then just lift a corner poke it out so you can grab it press panel in the pull the film out from behind it. haha hope that made some kind of sense. Haven't got thru my first cup of coffee e yet.

Try and find the 3m double sided tape that comes with a primer, that one is super strong. I used it on my brothers car to stick a fairing on and when we tried to tare it off the panel started to flex lol!! When I see my brother tomorrow I'll get the part number for it so you can look up. I'd use the tape on the top of those trims/fairings and urethane in the middle of the trim so it'll almost never come off again lol

5th May 2014, 09:31 PM
Winnie, have you got HID kits in your spotties? I am keen to fit a decent light bar, but only as a supplement to the HID pencil beams I have already. The HID's just have sooooo much reach it isn't funny, but with two pencil beams, there is a bit of middle ground that at a good light bar would fill in nicely, but I doubt could replace the HID. Your set up could be different so I am not suggesting you are wrong or anything, but I'd be surprised if a light bar outshone a good HID for that distance factor. They seem to work so well together from what I have seen.

I have 2 spot 35w hid spotties and a 30" light bar and to be honest they both shine the same length down the road only real benefit i see with the spotties are they add a tiny bit of extra light in the middle. I thought that was enough but after my last night drive thru some hilly, winding roads the addition of a roof mounted light would aid in seeing whats over a crest plus help not give you tunnel vision lol

Parksy

Not keen also. I don't like how it feels especially when driving around car parks and the extra force that's needed on the wheel. Running a regular damper now. Apparently the rtc damper can mask issues as well. I did find my left front tyre wore quicker when I had the damper on. Removed it, rotated the tyres and the tyre that's now fitted on the front LH side isn't showing excessive wear.

Gloss is easier to get a good finish in my opinion. It's easy to polish it, as opposed to Matt black where you can't do anything otherwise the finish is changed, then it looks inconsistent.
I like the black marker idea, I will definitely be doing it.

Ha ha ha.... no really come and hobby my car..... actually mate my next big thing other than my gearbox debacle is doing the dynamat as my car is way to noisy.... how much will I need to do my car do you think?

6th June 2014, 09:50 AM
Hahaha, my wife would kill me dead if I had another car to play with. I'm surprised I'm still alive actually. I told her about the steering box last night and yeah, not fun.

My advice BA is to get either the dynamat or another Butyl based sound deadener off eBay. So much cheaper than going to autobarn and buying it. Dynamat is pretty expensive, I think Westy tried another one of the butyl alternatives and had good success. This coupled with the sound deadening foam on top has great results. Especially if you pull the dash out and do the firewall.
I bought 2 of the 36square foot boxes off eBay and this has done the firewall, flooring up to but not including the cargo area and the four front doors. I've got fatmat in the cargo area, but this stuff is ashpalt based and smells like tar when it gets hot. Plus it melts and never actually was designed as a sound deadener, it just has been marketed as one by some clever people. You can buy this stuff at bunnings for very cheap, where it's sold as a roof tape or something along those lines.
