Rear diff axle seals

Hi all

Rebuilding my rear brake calipers and found the left hand side axle seal is leaking. Looking at eBay there's heaps of seals, can anyone point me to the one I need? Car is a 92 gq patrol efi with rear disk brakes. Also what's involved with replacing the seal? I feel comfortable to pull it all apart, my only problem is that this is my daily driver and I don't want to find out that I need a specialist tool or other parts to do the job.

I done mine recently. You will need a seal puller as the seals are pretty damn tight and can be hard to remove. You will also need a drift or some pipe the size as the outside of the seal to tap it in straight with a hammer. I got my seals from a local parts supplier, bursons, repco etc. or you could try Garry at Nizzbits in the vendor section. You are chasing a rear inner axle seal.

Cheers dominator. Looking at the manual, there appears to be an oil seal and a grease seal. Oil seal being the inner one and the grease one being the furthest out, closest to the hub. So you're saying I need the oil seal?
How was the actual job? Wheel off, caliper, disk, disk shield, caliper adapter, then pull it all out? Will I find the seal inside the diff or will it come out with the axle?
I take it the bearings are lubed using grease as opposed to diff oil in these rigs?

When I did the seals on my trol, the oil was coming out of the grease seal, but a mech said that if I packed a heap of grease into the bearings while the axle was out, the grease seal should be ok. And the oil seal is butted against a step in the axle housing or tube and the axle slides through it. After it is replaced you have to take great care to not let the axle rest on it as you slide it back in. If you want to get the grease seals done you may have to get them done by a mech with the correct tools (hydraulic press etc.) Its up to you.

they will be a Biatch to get out without this tool

they can also be a bugger to install without the correct seal die.

Sorry mudrunner, those links don't seem to work for me. I ended up buying a seal puller from autobarn. Looks like some sort of hook/ prying tool.

I ended up using a really big screwdriver and a thin bit of wood on the leverage point to extract the seal. From memory, I used a huge socket and extension to re seat the seal, using a mallet.

Sounds like a fairly straight forward job, will get into it as soon as I get some seals.

I probably should have mentioned, it is imperative to make sure you drive the seal in evenly, as they tend to kick at an angle.

Haha. That's what I done. I didn't hammer one of the seals in straight and I wrecked it. I ended up needing to get another one.
