Hey all, my name is Sim and I live on the northern beaches... In Sydney.

I have been offroading for three years so far and just got around to registering to the forum...bout time I guess.

As for vehicles, we have three... One GQ td42 (used to be rd28), one GQ rb30 (selling, to fuel hungry) and Toyota 80 series 4.2 turbo diesel (I recover it all the time in the td42 aha, still good car though).

So three years ago my father had a breakdown, due too stress and overworking. I started reading 4wd magazines...My father would grab a copy and read it before going to bed which inspired him to buy our first four wheel drive, not realizing that the bug had been caught he asked me to source out our first fourby.
After spending countless hours searching car sales and researching nissans and toyotas I found a mint condition 1997 RX rd28 GQ patrol for sale with only 160,000 k's on the engine for $11,500. Being on a budget this was a great find as there was no panel damage, no strange noises and completely stock standard, almost as if it had come straight from the showroom floor (yes that neat).
First thing we did was have a mechanic take a look and go over the truck with a fine tooth comb. first thing we had to replace was the clutch, still standard, after the clutch was the timing belt/chain. that is when we had recieved a call from the mechanic informing us of the common problem with this engine... and so began the bottom end bearing crankshaft replacement.
After all was fixed I headed straight to the watagans for some fun and my first ever real experience offroad. My father (Brett) and I spent a fair bit of time learning how to 4wd safely and even managed to squeeze in some group days to learn even more from experienced drivers.
After six months of learning as much as we could the modifying bug bit my father and I square on the rear-end.
First thing we purchased was a jerry can, I know it is not so much a mod but it was exciting for us, then came the first ARB snatch strap that would be the first and most used accessory in our recovery arsenal. After attempting to flush out the radiator for the first time I managed to crack the cylinder head.... MY BAD!!! Lesson learnt.... do not attempt while engine hot ahhhhh.
After replacing the cylinder head (should have just done the conversion then to TD42), I headed down to mansfield to see Mill at Millweld to get our 4inch stainless steel snorkel.... nice guy and quality work. After snorkel was on, went for a drive through howqua hills area to see sheepyard flat and enjoy the sound the new snorkel made while breathing new life into the truck. Upon leaving Mansfield the truck sounded different and kept overheating on the freeway on my way home. After numerous stops on the way home to keep truck from overheating, the mechanic gave us the all clear and told us the engines cooling system had to be flushed from oil residue left behind from the cracked cylinder head... I would have replaced the radiator when the head had cracked, but anyway.
Blocked off the egr on the little diesel that tried and made small improvements, in terms of cleaner air being sucked in and a small power increase...very small.
Next mod was a 2.75" beaudesert exhaust... nice increase in flow with noticable power gains...still no dyno tune or power figures.
Deciding then to give it a mild tune and swapping the standard 31" AT's to 33" AT's saw a mild increase in clearence, as well as adding a set of 50mm spacers for that extra bit of height. these few mods saw Jack (the trucks name, after our grandfather who passed away that year), turn into a more capable truck. After you put a set of spacers in, the urge to go bigger was eating at our excitement.
Turning to suspension... we acquired another GQ patrol with a full 4" lift...incl Snake racing dropped radius arms, adjustable upper/lower control arms at the rear, 4" coils and all other neccesary parts required to keep geometry intact and ended up swapping suspension from one car to the other. Pyro gauge and Boost gauge installed to keep an eye on the engines health on trips.

This brought us to planning our very first trip into the aussie outback. Starting at sydney and heading west. First stop... dubbo then onto broken hill. on the way to broken hill, the engine temp and egt were skyrocketing while pulling a Cub Camper behind us. Sitting at 80k/h and egt's at 450c started to see us becoming frustrated and while at broken hill decided on replacing the radiator with a copper brass unit to help with the cooling issues. Though when the old radiator was dismantled, the amount of sludge blocking the passages internally was ridiculous, oil and gunk was choking the cooling capacity of our dear little engine.
As we continued on to the flinders ranges the temps seemed to have dropped, but only a little and the decision to change our diff ratios from 4.65 to 4.88's saw towing and temps drop even further which helped reduce major concerns regarding overheating. Hawker Repco sorted that out for us and were extremely helpfull even flushing the engine block and radiator out again for us just to be safe. As the trip continued up to arkaroola then lake eyre and onto lyndhurst saw temps stablizing enough to continue up the strezleki track and onto cameron corner.
On arrival to cameron corner, the car was showing signs of damage which one of the blokes who worked on the station there took a look for us and confirmed that 6th cylinder had lost compression and 4th cylinder had low compression and the injector were lacking pressure due to contaminated fuel.
Limping home from cameron corner on pretty much 5 cylinders was a horrible trip, temperatures were hitting critical and top speed was now 60k/h sitting at 500egt.

When home from our problem riddled trip saw our RD28 needing a rebuild after 12 months of owning. always late in a 2.8!

The mechanic who was working on our truck said he had a TD42 block gear box and transfer case which we jumped at to replace the retired 2.8.
The engine TD42 currently powering our truck was almost finished a year and a half later.... a long time for a conversion!! I KNOW.
We have had problem after problem with the mechanic we are using as so far, the fully rebuilt TD42 has been rebuilt once since the initial recondition and the problems have not ended there.

So I have finally made it back to finish my "Hey guys" post.

some of the issues since the reconditioned TD42 was reconditioned:

Injectors.... we were told would either be reconditioned or new, though while it was at a diesel-dyno-tuning specialist we were informed that our injector pressure was at around 60psi (TD42 turbo) and squirting the diesel out. Basicly screwed. The bloke asked if we had ever had our injectors serviced or replaced and we told him they are only about 6000k's old..... the guy laughed and said "There is no way in hell they are new or reconditioned".
This cost us around a grand, but we have gotten a statement of findings from them, as well as photo's of the injectors condition.

Next,

Rear Diff Ring and Pinion, ARB Air Locker.
Driving up to newcastle to pick up a few things and on the way up, the rear wheels jammed up causing the rear of the truck to jump of the ground about a foot in the air going 40k/h after which not very nice sounds were coming from the rear. Turned out that 4 bolts attaching the crown to the locker had fallen out!!! Fallen...Out....WTF. 3 bolts were recovered, one in the axle shaft near the wheel, two in the bottom of the diff housing and the fourth bolt was not reeeaalllyyy recovered unless you count alot of metal shavings, filthy metalic diff oil with chunks of metal and a magnetic drain plug covered with more metal a bolt. Crown and pinion were brand new and genuine nissan. Air locker was brand new too, only a couple thousand k's. Apparantly no sort of washer was used and no locktight on any of the bolts, they were just put straight in. The internal copper air line was cut or broken and resoldered back together. Part of diff housing was also damaged right on/beside the gasket seal. Recieved a few thousand dollar bill for this one...New Air Locker, New genuine crown and pinion and this time the blokes up at newcastle installed it the right way.
This one set us back a few thousand.

Next,

This one is current... 6th cylinder injector tube/line/pipe snapped clean off at the injector! while on the freeway! Turns out that the injector tube/line/pipes were all forced into the vibration clamps and tightened so they didnt pop out! Yet the clamp at the 5th cylinder was not even there. because they were forced into placed, 2 others had been rubbing and had almost worn down as well!!!!
Currently waiting on a brand new genuine complete set of lines and vibration clamps from nissan.

Will update again soon. Sim

So, new injectors arrived and installed with a td42 plazmaman billet alloy inlet manifold.

Comparing the "road" performance from standard td42 inlet manifold and standard zd30 top mount intercooler..., with no intercooler, just a crossover pipe; bloody amazing! Whereas I can now cruise up the local main road hill in fourth keeping a constant 60k/h and before I would get 3/4's the way up, changing into third gear and reaching the top at 53k/h.

Huuge improvement!! In about two weeks a plazmaman W2A inter cooler will be added with a nice dunk tune to match, tweaking the boost to a decent 17-18psi.
Will update then on the difference.
Adding a patroldocta zd30 airbox to the mixture and swapping to a full three inch, turbo back exhaust, in conjunction with the other goodies. Rather than purring along, a nice low growl will be associated to the visual eyegasm.

New update, Have not been able to organize the inter-cooler as yet but soon. New radiator has been added to the truck... Drove up to Taree for the new radiator and the difference is awesome. The old radiator was an ADRAD copper/brass unit and did a fair job keeping the engine cool but more was definitely needed. The new radiator is a FENIX brand, which i think is a NZ company, one of the new high performance ones which has a light powder-coating on the tanks, top and bottom which is black. I was really surprised when i found out the radiator has two inlet/outlets on both sides of the tanks that can be used in combination with an electric water-pump for a heat exchanger. At the time i also changed the air con condenser, receiver dryer and getting it re-gassed. good price too.
On the way back to Sydney the thermostat buggered itself and caused me to spend the night at Newcastle till the following day to change it over.
all fixed, back on the road and with the new thermostat being an early opening type, kept the engine cooling work really efficiently the rest of the trip home.

All in all,

The copp[er brass ADRAD I had on the way up did work well to keep the engine cool, but on the long hauls up hills the temps raised to 90-100 whereas on the return trip on the same hills the new alloy only managed to raise no higher than 90 degrees at the extreme most. generally hanging out between 70-85 with the new radiator all other times.

More to come.......

I have many photo's of the mods and changes over the 3 years owning this fourby, I will be posting them later in posts to come.

We absolutely love our fourbeeeeeeees, many many good times (inc, having an emu run into the car and becoming an amputee from it, the emu was injured beyond help so I had to put it down, the only humane thing to do) and bad times, but they all add to the joyous times that owning a 4x4 can bring.

Ok guys, more troubles!!

Oil leaking from engine, on drivers side of block somewhere, causing loss of approx 500ml every 600k's and causing grief in trying locate point origin.
Indicators are leaning me towards rear block seal in bell housing, oil pump gasket or possible leaking from dipstick entry on block or dipstick top, due to dipstick being rather loose at top and not sealing very well.

Oil splatter no higher than bottom of oil filter location and oil is covering bottom half of starter motor and dripping down to the bottom section of bell housing clutch plate area.

Possible transfer case chain damage, 2nd hand gearbox and transfer supplied in conversion by mechanic and I have heard stories of 2nd hand transfers from ex mining vehicles, hoping that this is not the case as really don't want to deal with mechanic who did the conversion. When third gear continually kept popping out, we approached the mechanic and informed him of the issue on multiple occasions he kept saying "just keep an eye on it"! Then said he would change the gearstick to the correct one!! Which did not fix the issue and kept delaying it.
He finally sent the box off to be checked and it was what I had suspected... Third gear was rooted.
He seemed unhappy that he had to fix it!!

I was shocked with the responses I kept receiving.

Furthermore, the rear tail shaft is in shocking condition and must be replaced due to the diff angles that caused our rear diff pinion seal to leak and this will cost another 6-700 dollars to fix.

Too the point where we are fed up and are now organising a highly reputable workshop just west of Sydney city to fine tooth comb the entire conversion!!

Another issue as well being the angle the block is sitting in the engine bay! Looking front on, the block tilts to the passenger side noticeably causing me to lift the passenger side front with a jack to drain another 3-400ml extra oil out!

Just hit owning truck for 3 years and still have had no chance of taking it off the black top for what it's been built for!

Now unable to take this vehicle on a month long trip around tassie because of all this.

This will be the second trip that will be missing this vehicles enjoyment.
Must now take the 80 series that was bought to allow my folks to attend a trip with their friends through rural nsw almost 8 months ago.
The disappointment that accompanies such mechanical nightmares.

We have come too far to give up now.
Great to have a place to vent to others who can understand and appreciate how these issues can affect owners and the frustration endured.

Fair go mate, I hope you get it all sorted soon. Must be driving you nuts.

Never been real keen on hotting up engines, the cost is reliability, unfortunately you are supporting my theory.

When its all finished it should be a ripper 4B, good luck with it all.

Thanks macca,

Yeah coming from the jap import milk carton scene, diesels are are in a totally different ballpark. Only ever owned nissans though .
The information and knowledge I have gained is incredible. The support I have received from other 4x4 owners roadside is incredible though as well. What I have learnt over three years has allowed me to pay it forward to others who are roadside as well. From electrical issues, cooling systems, mechanical knowledge and various other lessons has allowed me to assist many others broken down on the side of tracks, freeways and inner city has helped maintain a positive view on 4wders.

I was returning to Sydney 2 weeks ago and another 4eder had broken down from a blown radiator and I just happened to have my old radiator in the truck and they were lucky to have an rd28 in their patrol, so I just put my old one in their truck and refused to take their money for it. I just said "all I ask is that next time you see someone else in trouble, just pay it forward".
If I can help others I will, enough said.

A second hand radiator for someone in need is a small price to pay.

I am not trying to change the world, just trying to keep the old Aussie tradition of lending a hand alive. That in itself will keep the butterfly effect continuing. At least that is what I hope for.
