Under the trol, changing the gearbox oil (at last) and I noticed the draglink behind the axle has been bent and looks like it has been heated and straightened. Is this a common repair, or should I have to buy a whole assembly? I'm guessing that the ball joints have had the whole weight of the front end on them.

Ow wow... Um yea, change ASAP.. by heating it they have basically weakened it.

On the phone to Nissan now. Bit of a soft spot for the Trols underbelly as it sits below axle height.

Thanks very much, MudRunner, but I have ordered one. Unfortunately I won't be going to ABs either. I don't trust the tie rod ends if they've had such a heavy load on them.

Sounds good. What can be done to keep the drag link out of harms way?

Ok, MudRunner, I have cancelled the order from Nissan. Caught it before they had started. So I will take you up in the offer of the rod. I spoke to a wheel alignment tech, and he said the tie rod ends will be fine. I'll just have to find a way of picking it up, or I could sling you a few bucks for it and postage. Many Thanks!

Where are you located?
Kallen is heading this way I think?

He'll miss my place by eighty ks. Those chrome-moly bars look the ducks guts, but if you put a lot of pressure on them, wouldn't it subject /send that extra pressure to the other standard components of the steering?

I have a 4140 on both my GQ and my GUIV. Also have the 4140 Drag link on both cars and 4140 rear lower trailing arms on both cars. That's the shit that bends!! You could jack the car off one of them!!

Ok, you've convinced me! I will add that to my long list of things to do, but for now I'm just very greatful to have a standard tie rod coming my way. It seems to be a bugger of a design to have such an easily bent rod below the axle height. The after-market manufacturers have realised it, I wonder why Nissan didn't fit the stronger rods?

Another question MudRunner, were your 4140 tie rod ends pre lubed or have grease nipples?

Superior do 2 different ones. The mecalfle (or whatever it is I can't remember) is their mid range product and seems really good comes with a male Tie Rod end on each end the screws into the Rod. These are not greaseable tie rod ends. The top product is the 4140 and they come with the heavier female end that the rod screws into! Much strong IMO and these also have a grease nipple and are serviceable.

a lot of my mates and also myself have lots of components made from 4140 and have had no issues with putting more stress on other components
