Hi all, just got a few questions about my td42 in a 92 GQ. I have just recently rebuilt the engine in it and i am having trouble with it blowing a fair bit of black smoke up hills, under load etc. It has always done this, even before the rebuild. The main thing i want to find out is how to measure the pump timing and what is about the right amount to set the fuel screw. I didnt change the fuel screw but i cant say it hasnt been done before i got it. I also marked the injector pump on removal and put it back in the same spot. Im thinking the timing could be to late but i dont really want to mess with it because i dont know what the conciquences could be.

Cheers Ryan

Its not running to badly, its slow but that seems normal lol. Just seems to pump the soot out more than i think it should. Just want to do a few checks.

Well I had a bit of a play around with the injector pump. I found the fuel screw and wound it out bit by bit with the car running and giving it a rev. Just wound it out until it revved up with next to no smoke. I'm not to sure if I have leaned it out to far but it seems to run just the same as it did previously. I have done some research and from what I have read all that it could change is just reduce the power, won't cause it to run hot or anything else. If anyone can tell me otherwise I am very open to your opinions.

Cheers Ryan.

Did you get your injectors reconditioned?

Yep ide recommend injectors, also if you are going to get then from a diesel shop as them to check you pump timing. I think mine had to be .7 on the dial gauge, ease to do but you have to have the dial gauge....

i would suggest reco the injectors then take it for a dyno tune that way they can alter the timing if needed and set the fuel to it's best i got mine done recently and it's a gu turbo so i think it's harder to tune and it only cost $315 for the tune.
