My first MQ has all the off road goodies you can imagine; turbo diesel, snorkel, bull bar and winch, 2" lifted spings, cargo barrier, front and rear auto lockers (yes everything I read says you can't get front auto lockers, but this one has, I've tested it every which way as I didn't believe it either, and it works as a locker, not welded). Plus some 'comforts' like a suspension seat, power steering and aircon.

However, the bad news is, it's going to take too much effort to get it through a road worthy and the clutch just broke, with it just sitting there. One week it was ok, next week, the lever into the grear box (after the hydrolics) is just floppy.

Well, I found this other MQ, 1981 diesel, it looks like it's been sat in a museum for 30 years, but it has been used with 266,000km on the clock. The condition is remarkable, completely stock, almost no rust, no body repairs and a sweet sounding engine. It's almost road worthy, from what I can see and from a previous check, it just needed 2 tyres and rear wheel bearings (although I realise this could vary between test centres).

I've not had a road worthy done on a car before, although I went through the anuual MOT (road worthy) in the UK for many years.

I have no idea where to go. Please could anyone recommend a good, reliable, reasonable place in the outer western Melbourne suburbs (outside the ring road or just inside) or Melton? Would it be best to go somewhere that has knowledge of old 4x4s? Is there such a place?

Any other RWC advice would be most welcome too, many thanks.

I can tell you, you will pay between $150 to $200 for a RWC check which may include second inspection plus repairs. The first inspection is valid for 7 days if the car fails and a pass certificate will last for 28 days. Any reputable workshop that has a license can do the inspection and write the certificate.

I personally don't know any workshops in the west because i'm in the northern suburbs ( Thomastown area) Hope this helps!

hi, thanks for that. I haven't collected the car yet, but when I do, I'll take it for the RWC to get a list of stuff, then work through it as quickly as possible to get it sorted.

The difficulty is of course, finding a reputable workshop!

2 years ago Vic rd's made us spend over $10,000 for new tools and equipment such as Tint testers, New brake machine ( deccelometer) , LPG leak tester, high megapixel cameral, external hard drive, laptop and some other things so dodgy RWC's cant be done any more. Every roady has to have pictures taken of the car with pics of the faults, saved in 2 storage devices for 7 years, hence the cost!

We charge $170 with second inspection next door charges $150 first inspection plus $50 second inspection, another shop down the rd charges $200 and i've even been told people have upto $250 just for the inspections.
