Hi lads,

I know this topic has been touched on before but, I just got off the phone to a well recommend deisel workshop in Perth, was told that they would not fit dts turbo kit to a 98 GU 4.2 na engine with 350,000 kms, as is already a weak engine, but then speaking others they say it's stronger!

The engine has been looked after and in my books is in a good condition!

Any thoughts or other recommendations would be greatful as I was really looking forward to getting some more go outta the old girl and am now slightly gutted!

Cheers

I would be checking the compression and is that's ok, Go for it.
Don't run over 8-10 psi

Quite a few guys have done it and not had any problems.
I am putting one in on my 2000 NA. In 2 weeks and its done 269,000km

Just using stock ht18 turbo and patrol parts.

Doesnt Berima diesels have a 4,2 GQ as their show car? They use it in the 4wd tv shows. It was turbo ed after 350k im pretty sure.

My GQ was turbo'd at 350,000 and is running 15psi and 4.6 gears pushing 35s and Loving it!

Get a compression test if your really concerned but you will love the power up!!

I agree with MudRunnerTD, also if you have not already done so, replace your clutch! A new turbo will certainly fark an old clutch very quickly.

PS, remember the old adage, do it once, do it right!

Berrima Diesel used to have a brochure that was basically entitled you're car is never too old to have a turbo. Might be worthwhile getting them on the phone and having a chat to them about WHY. The brochure used to say WHY, but I threw it away years ago.

G’day abbo05,

1. I would get a compression test done first. If the compression's on all cylinders are fine, i would then,

2. Get a full service, change engine oil, oil filters, fuel filter and air-filter and most importantly get your tappets adjusted.

3. In preparation for the new turbo to be installed, replace the old clutch with an h/duty clutch kit and also replace the rear main seal with the gear-box removed.

4. Run boost pressures between 12 and 16psi; also fit the following gauges as a safety precaution for the engine; Boost, EGT and a Water temp gauge.

5. Remember the old adage “Forewarned is forearmed.”(which means that if you know about something before it happens, you can be prepared for it)

I would seek advice from either Berrima diesel in NSW and there contact details are;

I would agree with the too old for the turbo. Just make sure it well serviced and you will get all you need from it.

Threedogs you might need Viagra but don't assume we all need that boost you reguire:smile:
