I got hold of a 1990 Mavrick. It came with Nissan 6JJx16 steel rims fitted with LT 235/85 R16s. It also has the fiberglass flares

My guesstimate is, with these rims and tires I don’t need the fiberglass flares, or am I wrong here?

Pull them off and have a look. They are easy to remove, about 6 or so Phillip head screws. If the tires don't poke out the sides then you're good.

The rims / tyres are eqvialant to 750 R 16 - ( with spit rims) = 32 inch tyre

I have a couple of sets of these tyres / rims - but they look bad on my GQ with the flares fitted.

I also run 31 10.5 r15 - that look great with t he flares.

If I was running the cheese cutters all the time - I would remove my flares.

Wouldn't a 235 be too big on a 6" rim? I have 235's on 8" rims and my sunnies on my troll are 8's as well.

Back before I down graded to the GU i had a GQ with split rims and no flares. I don't mind the narrow tyres but these 235/85 R16s on the 6JJx16's are inline with the edge of the basic body work.

As for running narrow wheels I tend to have a slight affinity to what is discusses here:

http://www.expeditionswest.com/research/white_papers/tire_selection_rev1.html

As it stands looks like I am in the market for at least 1 6JJx16 rim. I have 5 but 6 is better for that unheard of second tire failure.
