Yeah sorta what growler said. My plan is to build mine into a tough tourer. Drawers, rack, fridge... all the things that make a tourer but also lifted with barwork and muddies.

i kinda think i crossed the line in reverse from a tough tourer to a tourer when i put in the 2 long range tanks...... i find i avoid some of the rougher stuff because of fear of putting a hole in the tanks... i am told they can handle it but hard to trust!!

Muddies, 2" lift, drawers, bar work, fridge, roof rack for camping gear.
Good quality solid products but not necessarily costly

Plassys car is a tough tourer.

Good quality medium suspension, TD42 GU, well set up with loads of goodies, great draw system, snorkel, roof top camper and well looked after engine.

Don't give it a second thought Scotty, I'll post a pic of the long range tank in my GQ!!! My car has LANDED on it and very badly dented it! No leaks and now likely to be 10 to 15lts short!!!! Tough as guts!

If they are a decent brand then you can give them hell. I have got a LRA tank in my GQ and have had the weight of the patrol sitting on the tank when I had to winch across a rock. Barely scratched the tank.

I don't think it has anything to do with the vehicle but more so the nut behind the wheel. You can have all the accesories in the world but in real life it comes down to experience. It's the little tricks that you pick up over time like lock wiring certain things taking certain tools etc to get you out of trouble.

100% agree.

But I think Bene was after a vehicle description? Your right! You can buy a fully setup car or build an ARB special if you have the cash and simply have No Idea what to do with it!!

Throw the long arms in yours and some superflex radius arms and I'm with except maybe in a ute :p

Imo, good bar work and winch to suit.
Good set of tread, nice setup in the rear, comfortable cursing characteristics, moderate lift and long range tanks.

A tough tourer IMO is a 4x4 that can handle the rigours of outback travel with ease.
Driver and passenger in comfort, Up to date navigation equipment.
A tough tourer would be self sufficient, as in Roon Moons Dual cab GU.
A tough tourer would be expedition style. EPIRBS, SAT phones, etc

A tourer on the other hand is set up with off the shelf accessories
Probable not a daily driver, just waiting for the big trip once or twice
a year. When you pull in to fuel up at say Birdsville you'll find 2 or 3
4x4 that look very similar to yours. IMO thats what a tourer is.

My truck's been at least 2 years in the making of asking questions, and making mistakes, and learning from others. So to all of you, thank you for all your help. I've still got a little bit to go, but I'm nearly there. So, sit back, relax and enjoy.

Introducing DX grunt.....in the flesh

I’m in a class of my own……Tougher Tourer, and working towards the ultimate…Toughest Tourer. Lol

My sick set up.

Outdoor entertainment area. The awning goes across the 3m annex and the 2m for the back of my troll. It’s 5m long x 3m wide.
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af279/DXgrunt/DX%20grunt/Camp%20set%20up/Annexawning017.jpg

The annex was made so that I can 'drive in, drive out. It all zips together. Having said that, It's damn hard to line it all up and rezip it, once I move the truck. lol.

Ample power supply
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af279/DXgrunt/DX%20grunt/Telstra%20mods/DSCF2802-2.jpg
Solar panels now mounted on the roof, plenty of power to plug into and hot/cold onboard water system at the turn of a tap. Got my 1000w inverter waiting to be hooked up

Under carriage protection – Harris Hardcase for the front diff, front and rear recovery points and a winch.

HF radio that I also use to make mobile telephone calls, and 40 channel CB radio.
I’m in the process of putting the mobile phone aerial and CB aerial on top of the pod for better range.

And it all packs away nice and neatly, without the necessity of towing a trailer

I am so kidding with this pic. This was one of my first camping trips. Unfortunately I snuck home and got more stuff. That was a big mistake and I’ve learnt a lot since then. Lol.

I've also got more recovery gear than many shops. lol

I have more mods, but will post them up as I get them done. Not many more to go. Lol

Powered by a 4.2 TDi. Long range mains and sub and 2"lift. Coils front, Leaf (8) rear. Enough said. lol

Take care out there.

Thats definately on the way to being a tough tourer Rossco. But with those cheese cutters and standard height i reckon its still in the tourer section. Bang on some 33's you know you want to:)

Thanks. It's got a 2" lift, I think. Anyway, coils front, leaf (8 leafs) back. Hopefully pick up my pre-loved sunnies, today.

That what made me think about it in the first place. I see some labled tuff tourer. But if you take out all the touring componants, its not a tuff rig at all

Yeah I was after a description. But "all the gear and no idea" falls into the "Posers Rig" catagory?
