Hey all im hopefully just about to buy a turbo kit for my 4.2 diesel gq. The kit i'm looking at getting is a denco kit fron opposote lock. Price is $4400 installed including a 3inch exhaust. Does this seem a reasonable price for the kit?

Sounds good, I work in spares and priced a turbo kit for a TD42 and my wholesale price was just on $5000 with GST and freight.

I asked for a price with a egt, boost and pyro gauge and brought it up to $5300. So $900 for gauges. Surely they arnt that expensive if so it puts it out of my price range as i'm not to keen driving it without them, dont want it to go boom.

I wouldnt have thought so. Get them to add the egt sensor point on the exhaust and the rest can be done pretty simply.

Some ppl reckon i'd be better of sourcing the parts myself as it will be alot cheaper thoughts?

Depends how handy you are on the tools. If you are keen to install the kit yourself then it may work out cheaper to put the kit together yourself.
$900 extra for gauges seems extreme. EGT gauge and pyro (pyrometer) are the same thing.
Decent brand pyro will be around $100-$150
And $60-$80 for a boost gauge. Plus fitting obviously.
Where are you located?

i'mm not bad on the tools but as someone has stated i'm on a time limit to have it together and running.

How safe is it going to be to fit the turbo up leave the boost anf fuel alone and drive it over easter. When i get back i can then get gauges myself and tuned properly.

If you want mate i can get you a price with all the gear you want using DTS turbo kit and exhaust and a choice of autometer or vdo gauges ?? But freight will be the only problem i rekon
BigRAWesty

If that's the case leave ot untill you have time. You will need some way of telling boost levels so yea, do it once, do it right.. start stock piling though..

So i can get a tune done for $150 so with ur price it will be 4k and from all things i have read the dts is better then the turbo glide and the tuner agreed and he sells both kits. Would i be right does this seem a better deal then?
Also he doesnt dyno tune he takes it and tunes it on the td teckons thats the best way to do it.
Also does the exhaust supplied have the bungs for the gauges?
Alitis007
14th March 2013, 03:09 PM
The exhaust does have the bung for the pyro meter.
Weather its a good deal or not, you tell me considering for you to buy the components at a retail price it will be close to 5g's and for a forum special i got an extra $100 off what my supplier normally sells the turbo kit for !!
And apparently after you fit the kit all you need to do is turn up the fuel 1/4 of a turn and thats it!!!

The DTS kit is the MTQ kit mate! Winner and an Awesome Price from George! Good one George.
The DTS kit will come with a 3" Mandrel Bent exhaust if its the same as mine and a 3" is alway better than a 2.5" behind a TD42! a 2.5 should go on the back of a ZD30 or RD28 but not a Turbo Charged TD42!

No dramas Darren any time mate!
Turbo timers there are a lot to choose from you can go from a very basic and reliable analog style right up to full digital auto counting. I was told by a mate that alot of trucks use the ARE timer and that they very reliable but i have a GReedy full auto timer in my toy which is good coz of how i drive it :) i set it at 1min then the time starts to increase the longer i drive over 3000rpm. Some manufacturers make plug and play looms for the popular cars ie RX7, Skyline, Supra ect so if you wanted you could do a google search for the turbo timer plug and and play loom for your Q and also go to a Autobarn have a look at what they stock then look for it on ebay.

I think somebody is having a lend of you, turbo = $700 manifold $350 K&N pod filter $100 nuts bolts hoses etc =$100, gauges from $50 to $150
Exhaust = $550. All this does not add up to $5500. I have just done mine three days ago. All labour mine, about 5-6 hrs, exhaust done by mob down the road from here about 2 K's

There is a huge difference in turbo quality.. my guess you running a oil feed bushed turbo? Not bearing.
The kit mentioned untilises the top mount filter, which allows stock snorkle and filter use, and is up out the way for water crossings, and quality 3" stainless steel zorst.. delivered, bolt on no more to pay..
$5g is a dam good price..

DTS kits use a bush style turbo and so are the high quality units that come out of such places as UFI. While ball bearing turbos have their benefits they also have there downfalls.
The kit is also a 3" mandrel aluminised exhaust not stainless.
While you can do it on the cheap as brisat said thats exactly how you are doing it "cheap". These kits are the go as everything is there you just bolt it on. They use quality components and you can see this is the fittings and casting of the manifold. You have it all there so you get your kit and fit it, no running around getting the right fittings or a hose for this or a bracket for that.
Alitis007
18th March 2013, 11:12 AM
Heres what happens to cheap turbo's
27178
I doubt you could get a quality turbo kit for under 2k seeing as a T04z is worth $1900 and the DTS kit has the TD05 which is bigger, the exhaust components to buy separately will cost you roughly $500 plus the manifold, and you still need fittings and hoses. The tachos, boost gauges are cheap around $60 but a good quality pyro will set you back around the $250 mark.
But you could do it cheap if you could get really really good mates rates on a 2nd hand GU setup BUT i don't think you will have change from 2grand and you are buying second hand parts that always have inherit problems from their previous life so for a few extra $$ your buying quality, NEW components and also virtually doubling the value of your vehicle!!

Mate i didnt spend 5500 on my kit a long way from it. This way ill know it will work and be reliable as it is a proven combo on many td42 running around the country. Sometimes you pay for piece of mind.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the encouragement...
Sorry got glued to the India vs Australia Test Cricket Match and then got busy @ office...
So quickly coming to the point...
So bought the Nissan Patrol Y61 TD42 Diesel (Year - 2000) almost 15 days back... Enjoying the drive all this while... I have previously been offroading on another vehicle which is a Mahindra Thar 4x4 made in India, but been eyeing a Patrol since many years now... Finally got hold of one...
SO the engine is in complete stock condition and no modifications have been done till now at all with the engine... neither have i put in any lift kits... I was easily able to touch 155/kmph on the highway and it was fun...
But,
Now i am really looking to Mod it up with a Turbo kit and other essentials...
I have been glued to google since a while now reading on various portals about what mods to do and what are the best kits, but all seem to have their own versions of pros and cons... And yes i have used the "Search Box" of this forum too with all possible keywords so get solutions and have managed to read up on quite a few informative responses...
I have really been keen on having the best setup done on this dream machine of mine... Not like the craze setups which they do in Dubai and other UAE countries that are built to beat Lambos but something that will be super robust on the Highways and also for offroading...
Here in India although there are loads of awesome mechs and people really invest in foreign cars but the ones who take up these type of turbo projects are quite limited and also have their own reservations about certain things...
SO i thought this forum wud be my best best...
So in a nutshell, i'll point out my exact requirements and plz add/omit any suggestions with ur technical expertise to help me prepare the best package with the best price quote i can look for... There have been so many names thrown around like DTS, Denco, UFI, Safarisnorkel, MTQ and so on... really confused which is the best and most reliable one to order from? I really don't wanna mess this up and
1) Best Possible Turbo kit: What are the different variants of the turbo kit that i can go for maximum Torque and Bhp? Are there anything bigger? As per the current stock specification, my Patrol should be giving round 91-92kW and 265Nm on stock conditon... What is the max and safest that i can go for maximum and safest kit?
2) Are these high mount or Low mount kits? : Could u put some light on which one should one go for and why?
Purpose of driving - I am a Travel writers and filmaker who is also a car enthusiast who goes for long road trips along with Offroading once in a while, so i am looking at a beast of a setup... Would having the turbo kit installed have any sever effect in traffic conditions when i am driving slow considering Indian traffic conditions can sometimes be a major headache...
3) What Intecooler should i go for along with which kit for maximum performance... Kindly share the variants plz... DO i need to go for a larger Intercooler or the smaller and which one would you recommend?
4) DO i need to change my Fuel pump? Which one would i have to go in for in that case? Cause i a mech here and he said that the original Fuel Pump would be fine but i doubt that... Should i be changing the fuel pump too for maximum output? Do we have to go for a larger 12mm fuel pump?
5) Pyrometer and Boost Gauges - which types could you recommend to add to the part of the package to be purchased? i wanna keep a tap of the performance from within since i don't wanna be driving in a guessing state of mind all the time
6) 3 inch exhaust with manifold: Which one do you offer? Also are there any Mufflers like Magnaflow that i cud also buy?
7) Diesel Fuel Injectors: Which one do you recommend?
8) Do i need to change clutch plates too?
8) Also, not sure if you know, but traffic in India gets pretty bad... Would adding this turbo kit have any massive impact on my Car like overheating or anything else?
Misc.: Additionally, if there is anything else that you think needs to be added to make the package a robust kit, plz add in your suggestion and kindly help me with the best quote possible... I will be wanting to install these soon since i am planning a major run through in the coming months, so wud need to spend some time with my Mechanic in all this setup... Also hoping there would be setup guides that these Vendors would provide when we purchase from them?
P.S.: Sorry for having put out so many pointers, but this is only so that i could accommodate all my questions here... I tried reading up the forum as much as i cud, but i just wanted to get the expert opinion...
Will await your positive replies,
Regards,
Akshay

Hey mate a lot of us here have been putting on a Borgwarner 6758 turbo with a 12mm pump using different intercoolers from front mount to top mount getting some impressive results with a very efficient turbo along with good temps.

Hey mate, I run a Garrett GTX2863r which ran really nicely on an 11mm pump. I have a 12mm pump now and the turbo is my limiting factor, I could put a Borgwarner on and make a lot more power and torque.
Honestly I would recommend the Borgwarner that AB has on his GQ. There are no other turbo out that I have seen work ad efficiently on a TD42.
The BW also gave some very impressive results on a 10mm pump so I would imagine the same on your 11mm pump.
As for intercooler, I have a cross country top mount. If I had my time again I would save the money and make a front mount cooler, they do work better at the front. Don't get me wrong, the cross country is a great bit of gear, and comes with everything you need but it was very expensive and isn't as efficient as a front mount.
I use autometer gauges, they were on the car when I bought it but they are a good quality gauge.

Hey Winnie
Thanks for the reply...
Few questions:
1) I have been reading up a lot... Like u suggested that one cud go for Garrett GTX2863r; but then with my research a lot of peeps have talked about TD05 OR td05 (16g,18g)... How different r these from the one u suggested... And can i go in for a TD05 18G for good power?
Also, is UFI my best bet to buy these from or DTS is where i got to head?
2) I think i will save money but wud wanna for a front mount cooler for sure....
3) As i add in an intercooler and bigger turbo jet, i wud surely wanna change my Fuel Pump.. Which one wold u recommend and also the company of which i should buy the 12mm one?
Would be great if u cud help me out with these queries plz,,,,
Thanks,
Akshay
