View Full Version : Is AM still used?

I always had a AM set in my car when I was in my teens, mainly to be like Bandit.

I now have 2 UHF sets in my patrol but I'm doing a dash reconfigure and decided I'd throw a AM SSB set in, mainly as I know a mate has one in his car, and when we use UHF there's usually some dickhead that butts in and makes an ass of himself. At least if we both have an AM set we might be able to talk in a bit of privacy.

Does anyone still use AM sets? Even my UHF is a lot quieter than it was, I assume that now mobile phones are so cheap and get better reception, most of the usual UHF users (security/truckers/etc) just send a text or make a call.

I'm in Cessnock in the hunter valley, so I get a lot of trucks passing through but even then, on my scanner inside, my UHF programmed frequencies are really quiet,

Ill throw it in anyway and see how it goes, it's a shame people have moved away from CB type communication, it will soon become obsolete I fear.

Dont use it now, for privacy we choose say 26.7 as our channel on UHF,
Did have a dual band Icom as 1 mate had UHF the other a CB

Still a few HF CB users out there but certainly no congestion so very easy to find a quiet channel.

I had a dual band Uniden up until recently. Their UH 0990 is not a bad bit of kit actually.

Plus he does a bit of morse code on the side, and to keep his hand in, he uses the old string and cans. PML.

Hey GQPorkroll,

When the bloke butts in and make and ass of himself, does he say COCKHEAD in a real raspy voice,

I've got a few mates in Newcastle that tell me about this bloke and it is a great source of amusement to us, as the bloke is a complete tosser.

Hey now you mention that I've heard him.

I was following a mate and was asking if he could see any shimmy on my front wheels as I had death wobbles, and we were comparing our speedo readings to actual GPS readings on a quiet channel (maybe 25 or 30) and every few minutes COCKHEADS..... YEAH 4x4 COCKHEADS.......
Obviously a very bored, stoned idiot with a decent rig because he pushed a lot of lights on both our sets.

I got sick of using the SSB because of the ' idiot factor'. I had installed a Dick Smith set with a directional beam set up in my shed. I wanted to talk to family in central Vic, But I could get Melb, Tas, West Aus, Hawaii, Sydney, and NZ and Southern Qld. But not a whisper from over the mountain ranges. I still have a few small am sets, but I snapped my whip arial on a low hanging branch and and so took the radio out. I haven't bothered to re-install the set. I like the fact that you can still talk to the people you're travelling with, when they have gone over a hill or rough terrain.

I like my cb set and UHF but my cb has a speaker that I can talk to people out side the cars with or yell out to good looking sorts
