i don't know whose idea it was to replace the vinyl/plastic trim with the silver stuff in the GU's but its a shocker for fade/chip and scratching.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

You can sand and paint it silver again, then put clear on it, and it should last a bit longer.

The automotive vinyl repair guys can do this for you if you can't do yourself.

Or just paint it all black

Yep my GUIV is a shocker for almost rubbing the interior paint off!! The dealer repaired it when I bought it and its nearlly as bad again.

Also the painted handle surround on the drivers door external is showing rub marks too!

WTF

I just recently, 2 weeks ago, painted the arm rest, piece around the auto shifter and centre surround the radio. I went to local paint shop who mixed up a few spray cans and a satin clear coat. I also got a plastic primer as well. I used 800 & 1000 grit paper and the results can out fantastic. It cost me about $90 for all the paint, primer and sandpaper.

Took about 1/2 day. Hope this helps...

I had my first GU with the newer style interior covered with a similar type woodgrain to the TI interior, and then a clear coat over the top.

Still looked brand new when I traded it in. Cost around 900

I used 3M Scotchprint 1080 Brushed Steel Vinyl, came out pretty good.

I have thought about doing the same, how hard was it to apply?

There are plenty of How to clips on Youtube, it was a bit fiddly around corner bits and some edges.

The only tools you need are a heat gun/hair dryer and a sharp blade (I used a box cutter). Try a door handle first. You will get the idea of how to stretch and shrink after a few goes. Take your time and you should be OK.

My results are OK, you have to look hard to see the "ugly" bits :)

I was thinking of doing the carbon fibre look on all the silver plastics bits...like this: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?15839-Designer-Wraps-Uses-for-Vinyl-Wrap

and heres the install vid: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?16641-3M-Designer-Wrap-Day-%96-Video

Here you go
The only thing that would deter me from the carbon fibre look is trying to keep the pattern looking "straight", the brushed look on mine isn't exactly straight in parts if you look really close

Looks really good and I agree it might be easier to go for a plain look rather then worry about getting the lines straight...Thanks for that

Just for interest sake, this is the mob I bought the wrap from http://www.topvinylfilms.com/

At the time (October 2011) they were the best price I could find, delivery took around 3 weeks.
