Its hard to explain,
But if i take off slow there is a rattle or vibration you can hear but if i speed up a bit it goes away,
Like in the shopping centre carpark where you are going slow in 1st or 2nd its noticeable then,
But if you speed up a bit it goes away.
As i said its hard to explain but any feedback would be helpful,
Cheers
Tonks.

Sounds like it will be your gearbox, very very common in the 4.2s and nothing to be concerned about!

Winnie,
Thanks for that,
Do you know why ?
Its only got 124 K on it,
And what's the fix,
Cheers,

Does this make more sense,
It has a chadder noise in 1st 2nd 3rd gear at low revs,
But after more revs it goes away.

Just googled 4.2 nissan patrol noisey gearbox, and does seem quite common, and nothing to worry about,
But still not sure.

Just keep an eye (or ear) on it for any changes. If you are really concerned get it checked out.

Tonks,
Mine used to have it too, it seems to be a harmonic vibration set off by the motor and gearbox, when you are lugging it a little, or under around 1200 RPM??? Haven't had mine for a few years now, so I can't remember the exact RPM

I notice mine when reversing out of the driveway and when leaving a carpark. Doesn't seem to do it when warm.

Very common mate with the 4.2. Mine harmonics through engine and gearbox and exhaust.
It's just the awesome power of the td42 wanting to get off road rather than the black stuff!

Thanks guys,
I think I might call past the guys that service it for me and see what they have to say,
Will let you know,
Cheers again,

Mine gets a fair bit louder when it's stopped with the handbrake on a slight incline and in neutral.

I've got the 4.2 TDi and it does it. It sounds like it's almost ready to stall, but it disappears once you put the revs up.
My mechanic, who's a vehicle examiner, hasn't said anything, and it's been serviced at Auto Masters before that. No one has mentioned it.
That's why I call my truck DX grunt. The noise sounds like untamed power waiting to be unleashed. PML. LOL

DxG, that's exactly it, only at low revs and disappears after you apply more revs.

I thought it was a standard 4.2 noise at low RPM. Mine does it and it is noisy. Just get used too it.

Haha yeah when you get used to it you grow to love it! Was interested to read exactly what caused it though as I never really knew exactly why they do this.
Does anybody know what the factory original clutch is in the Y61 TD42T?

All I know is all TD42Ti come with Solid Mass flywheel from factory.
They are big like truck gearboxes so its normal. No ill effect. Most have it and through their life its all good.
Just embarrassing at times haha.

Mine makes this noise as well...
Is there any way at all you can stop it making the noise, by adjusting the harmonics or anything? Would replacing the clutch and all gear oils help at all?
Cheers

Honestly I have read every single thread and post on the internet I can find.
I would say no. Its a normal thing due to the design and nature of the massive gearbox.
there is no detrimental affect at all. Just embarrasing at times but you get use to it lol

What actual components is it that are rattling?

It's called gear rollover. It's the gears themselves meshing under little to no load. Give it some load or rpm and it goes away.

Its strange how this is more prevalent with the TD's. My ZD never had this, even with a SMF. Now with a TD, using all the ZD running gear still, I have this same rattle. But strangely enough, I like it.

It could be due to the odd firing order and shear rotating mass of the TD, but I dont really know.

Sounds more than plausible to me Ben mate!
My 6.5NA tractor donk bolted onto the 4.2 stock manual box can chug as low as
-500rpm under crawling load. The chatter of the combination is greater than any other stock 4.2/manual combo I’ve ever owned, all good still we hope :-)

Has anyone bought the TD42T from new?
Did it do it straight out of the showroom floor too?

Yes it did it from the very 1st day back in June 2006.
Service manager at dealer was expert with the 4.2's and loved them. He said it was the design of and the way gears were cut for strength. It was hardly noticable at first and it WILL only get worse but is not a problem,
My son's GQ ute with close to 600k is very loud but my GU is still acceptable.
Treat it as a badge of honor as you have the very best.
