Hi All
I am looking at upgrading to a 98 GU TB45 manual with LPG and a little over 200K
What do you guys recon good vehicle and if so anything to look out for?
Also does running on LPG cause any problems with the engine head or anything else ?

Mate i have heard LPG creating issues, but you just need to be vigilant with keeping the tappets adjusted on a regular basis, it is common for tappets to get sloppy, you can get away with it for longer on straight petrol, not so on LPG.

Also be aware that the LPG tank normally replaces the main fuel tank, this is no problem unless you like to do the sand islands (fraser, straddie etc) as there is no LPG available , so once dry, you are left with the small reserve tank for petrol, and as the 4.5L is a thirsty pig, and the reserve is small, so you will need to fill often.

But apart from that, and you are aware they are thirsty (LPG will help) they are a great reliable rig, and will take you anywhere you wanna go (within range of a servo)

Thirsty but a great strong patrol..... it will go for ever and even forgive you for being a little bit neglectful.... i have had the 1998 manual but now have the 99 auto (neither on gas though) and have practically no trouble ever!!!!!

Go for it you won't be sorry. I have heard that RACQ carry 9kg LPG bottles to assist breakdowns when run out of fuel. I'm dual fuel and while thirsty, cheaper than petrol at $1.60 a litre.

Your servos will start to know you on a first name basis after a while and they arnt the fastest on the street either but what they lack in power they make up in torque. LPG on any car does damage regardless how well you maintain it so get it checked by a mechanic so they can give you an overall opinion on the car and get them to give it a compression test so you know the health of the motor too.

Would not swap my 4.5gu.
Plenty of power for towing and whilst thirsty on petrol 16 litres per 100ks i achieve 18 litres per 100 ks on gas which is cheaper than mosy diesels.
Just keep it tuned by a lpg specialist and regularly put a tank of petrol .
Mine has just turned over 300,000k and i expect at least another 200,000 easliy.
Regularly service it and you should not have much trouble.
Go for it

Mate I had a 4.5 on gas , went up to the Rock, Alice ,Kings Canyon when it got hot the gas tank got vacum locks in it you could only fill it half way. what a pain you could not fix the problem you had to wait till the tank cooled down usually over night had 2 jerry cans of petrol. Also if you went off the main roads the gas pumps kept braking down because of the heat and the owners never knew when they were going to get fixed, Its up to you I got rid of my and now have an 03 3ltr diesel patrol by diesel only way to go

Love my Patrol. 4.5 is a little slow but a few mods will help with power.
