View Full Version : What parts required to turbo TD42 GQ

Have been pondering the idea of turboing the old girl for some time. Really only need it for when travelling with a full load (she struggles on steep hills in 3rd gear some times). So was after some advice. Am looking to do it as cheap as reasonably possible. Did look at the cheap turbo kits on ebay but have been advised to stay away and possibly go with a setup from a GU. Is this a good idea for the kinda of work the truck will be doing? If so, can someone give me:
a) a list of parts required to do the conversion (don't wanna have to keep going back to wreckers etc for more parts) including type of turbo, model of GU, intercooler etc
b) any ideas where I might source all the parts
c) any other info you can think off
d) will I need to upgrade pump?
Thx
Tony

Thanks guys. I'm not looking at buying new. Can't stomach splashing out $3k on a vehicle worth only twice that. Thats why i was considering a GU setup, perhaps off a wreck.... Will check out that DIY install link

Can someone confirm this is the oil feed pickup? If so, is it a threaded hole with a rubber stopper in it?. If not how do get into it? What size fitting screws in into it?

This hole is for the oil feed to turbo.
Need an Allen key and will unscrew - maybe need a bit force.
Need a 1/8 adapter - this kit fits.

Can I ask why one would use the oil feed from near the engine mount (which is a pain to get to and problematic to undo by all accounts) when you could more easily use the feed from the oil pressure sensor? Is it just a length of hose issue ie would need to get one custom made up?
Thx

Never looked at the oil pressure feed.
I just used the one that is original used by the TD's. This feed was the easiest to use.
I had no problem undoing it or connecting my oil feed to it.

My bung was seized on the block, 20 years of hot and cold can make it a nightmare to undo. I ended up going from the oil pressure sender as well. Most people would prefer to go from the bung on the engine mount because I guess It's neater (same side of block) rather than running the braided line around the back of the engine.

Seems to be quite common.... Oh well, won't know till I try it.... lots of WD40 beforehand.....

Use inox and spray it on everychance you can get. I do this on exhaust studs and very rarely break them. Apply when hot and let it soak

I did mine for about a grand mate so if you are heading down this path then unfortunately patience is the key to find the parts you need or search search search to find someone upgrading their TD42 turbo and get all the goodies in one go.
Turbo, exhaust manifold, air filter housing, hoses, inlet and cross over pipes etc.

That was the plan AB. Am in no hurry. Missed out on an almost complete setup on Perth Gumtree the other day. Was like $350 or something (no hoses or air filter housing though). Any advise on how to tell if a turbo is worn or stuffed (if its off the engine)?

I did my setup for 1k as well then installed a $700 3" full straight exhuast system to complement it. I used an ebay manifold for $400 (now $150), t3/t4 hybrid turbo $300, aliminium cross over pipe $30, rubber fittings $70, then the rest on gauges, pillar pod, oil drain and feed. I also took my oil feed from teeing off the oil pressure sender as my bung was frozen in the block. Running 15 psi and loving it also the ebay turbo has no signs of wear after 6months of hard use.

Check out AB's post on here #4. Pretty much explains everything. I am doing my sump this weekend for the turbo drain.
I have been slowly getting parts for my turbo install - just waiting on new exhaust, intercooler and gauges so i can fit everything in one weekend.
I have used all stock Nissan parts.
Turbo with 3" dump $200
Exhaust manifold $350
Nissan TD airbox $170
Intercooler with all piping and scoop $350
3" exhaust $700
Turbo oil feed $30
Got everything from gumtree or eBay - intercooler from a forum.

hey mate how much better does it go with the turbo?
considering buying the same kit off ebay, other thing is did your clutch handle the extra power/torque? Mine feels like heavy duty but unsure and bit worried it wont be up to task

How did you install into the sump? Looks like its only tack welded in. Just got an ebay turbo kit for 590 ill do the dump pipe and cross over my self. But dont want to pull the sump..
I have also noticed that the supplied turbo line has been fitted with a 1.5-2mm restriction to allow use of the factory vacume pump drain.

I punched a rod through the top part of my sump with gauze and then put a barb on to connect the drain...lol.
A lot of people cringe when they hear that but I have had zero metal fragments in my sump and saved me hours of removing the sump to weld in a fitting. When you punch it through you only get a splade effect of the metal not a cut and fragments going into your sump but that is purely your call mate if you want to head down the elcheapo path.

Mate it doubled the power of the old girl. Hills I used to have to drop back to third I can now cruise up in 5th, that much of a difference! Also I took the sump off and got a piece of stainless pipe tig welded in. The guy welded the inside and outside but when taking it for a test drive it pissed out oil from there, ended up being a small defect in the pipe he used so he just covered it with mig weld.
The turbo line with the restrictor will be the feed line as you don't wan't any restriction on the drain side. That's why I opted for a drain straight into the sump as its the quickest way out. You can use the alternator drain but to me it feels wrong to do so as it was designed for only an alternator drain and not to be shared.
For my oil feed I teed off the oil pressure sender on the drivers side of the engine as the bung on the passangers side near the engine mount was frozen into the block.

As long as you get the kit from a reliable seller that has strict quality control then you will be fine. The turbo is slightly laggy to get on full boost because the compressor side is so large. You could use the same manifold and setup and just use your choice of turbo to suit your needs. If mine goes I will opt for a mitsubishi td05 with either a 16gram or 18gram compressor wheel. With that turbo it should be on boost by 1200rpm and full boost (15psi) by 1500 rpm

Maxspeedingrods on Ebay for turbo and manifold but F-all after sales service , K&N pod filter, rear of alternator for feed and return, Pirtek will have what you need for not a lot of money, and they will know what it is you are talking about. Pipe connections are
1/8 gas or M10 1mm thread. I have enclosed the pod in some 150mm poly pipe and run some 90mm to the original hole in the inner guard. Will maybe get a photo tommorrow if you need it

I wouldn't waste my money on that kit, its cheap for a reason! This is one of those turbos after a rb30 gave it a work out

A piece of the blade going into your motor can cost you alot of money. Personally i would spend the $$ on a DTS kit like this

Oil and water cooled turbo and quality components proven to work and last by many members on here.

Its your car and your money mate but id hate to see what a piece of the compressor wheel will do inside a diesel. I choose quality and reliability from experience now over dollar amount, thats my value for money!!

Wow the rb30 must have been red linning it for that to happen. If your worried about that happening get an intercooler.
