View Full Version : Limp mode with Chip It

I have recently installed a chip it chip in my GU8 and am having it go into Limp mode after 5 minutes or so of driving. It is preventing me from getting above about 2300 revs and causing both the traction control lights to come on. My ultra gauge is not detecting any codes.
I have removed the chip and harness but not the fuel rail mod or egr plate and am still getting the same issues.
Has anyone else had this issue or know of a work around? My obvious next step is to remove one of the two last remaining mods one at a time until it no longer does this but I am wondering how so many run this without a problem.
Yes I could call ChipIt, and may very well do but then any useful information would not be posted on this forum and available to others later.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Do you suspect its over boosted ??Disconnect battery for 1/2 hr
What motor??
Remove EGR plate.

i think the crd models need a hole in the egr plate , does your plate have a hole .

Mate, Im not sure too many members here have this chip installed.
I would have already been on the phone to them to sort it out, I would't risk a brand new vehicle especially after modifying the fuel rail
Let us know how you go tho

The hole will stop the EGR error code coming on but I haven't heard it making the vehicle go into limp mode...but I would remove it altogether to eliminate that side of things

It will be the fuel rail mod that will be causing your problems
You will need to map the chip with a tune that suits the fuel rail mod or get rid of the mod and then try a milder tune

i would not mess around, get on to chip it straight away they will have all the answers although i am pretty sure they will blame the egr blocking plate. as someone else has posted the plate needs a small hole in the common rail also it could be that the chip is up to high this will also send it into limp mode. i bought a cheapy off crapbay and it would cut the engine altogether with no fault codes at all so i removed that and bought a steinbauer and if i had my time again i would not have as have fitted a 2 3/4 beaudesert exhaust and that has been the best mod by far. these engines are very temprimental and any mod you do can potentially make them play up as i have experienced first hand. as for posting first, you are more help to other forum users by asking CHIPIT the questions then posting the answers for the rest of us cheers.......

It won't be the EGR. I don't have a hole in mine as I don't see the point. If you want to block it then block it.
It will put up a P0401 code every now and then but that code will not affect power, limp mode etc etc... all it does is illuminate the check engine light and hold the code for later analysis as EGR is a non essential system.
10 seconds with a Scangauge next time you stop or whatever will clear the code and reset the light.
FWIW I agree with Nisshead and Happy... I would be 99% it's the fuel rail mod. Some of the fuel OBD parameters will put the vehicle into limp but I have no experience with any of the Traction Control systems so can't comment/explain that one but probably sounds right as well.

Well I have removed the fuel mod and left the egr plate in, yes it has a hole in it. I have reattached the chip and I no longer get the same issues as before. Saying that after giving an extreme workout under repeated heavy acceleration I did manage to make it go into limp mode once. It did also occasionally exhibit a strange issue when at full acceleration and dropping back 2 gears it would then surge instead of changing gears up when it should have. I think though it will be very hard to replicate the driving conditions I put it through in normal driving but am contemplating winding it back to tune 4.
Thanks everyone for their assistance.

Hi All, I made a big mistake by having chip-it install a Dominator MK 1 chipit to my GU TI Auto 2012 . Had trouble from day 1, first prob was a fuel leak from the rail ,it went back 6 TIMES yes 6 Times, then finally
after that was sorted i was told all is good ,,,Wrong,,, next problem when I put demand on the pedal it went into limp mode at 2300 rpm, took it back and was told all good ....Wrong again ,,,,
Then the ECU light came on that got sorted , so finally i decided to remove the chip and all issues had gone also noticed absolutely no difference in power or torque Now have taken the chip back and asked
for a refund because they state money back guarantee, which apparently means nothing ,the guarantee applies if there is no increase in power , i forgot to mention the chip was replaced three times .
Today 08-01-2014 I returned the chip and demanded a full refund, and was told the manager ( Justin ) was not in , now I'm involving the ombudsman , Will keep you posted
