View Full Version : Buying a GU and selling a GQ?

Hey Folks.
Just looking for some advice ....
We are thinking about doing tyres and suspension on our 1997 GQ ST 2.8TD with 415,000km .... but then we are also thinking about upgrading to a newer GU (seen a 2005 ST-L 3.0TD 133,000km).
I know there are lots of pros and cons for both - but does anyone have any advice about trading-in the GQ Vs trying to sell separate.
While it's high mileage, it's had bottom end rebuild 20,000km ago, plus we added bullbar, spotties etc (was prety stock standard when we got it). Also had recent diesel tune and all regular services since we got it. Paintwork is a bit worn on Bonnet and roof (dont think previous owner cleaned off the bird poo etc).
What sort of price do you reckon we should look at getting for it? And, given the mileage, would we better off taking the hit and trading it in?

Only a 2.8 td..
Throw up a pic here. We'll get a better idea of you range then..
But sell private. Cut out the middle man.
And fyi, a good cut and polish goes a long way...

Hey Folks,
Here's a pic of her - she doesn't look too bad..... but there are some spots on the roof and bonnet where the coating had come off, plus a few odd marks on the sides. But she cleans up pretty well for selling :)
She'll be going with cargo barrier, windscreen protectors, bull bar, spotties etc.
Thoughts? Trace

Also - with the NADS thing .... does it matter what mileage it's done at?
ie if we bought a Patrol with 100,000km Vs 150,000 km - is that likely to have any impact?
And are engines with this sort of mileage (100-150k) likely to have any issues? Any signs we should look for? (note we will also get a RAA or similar check done before buying) - plus looking at garages with warranty for at least 12 months (would this be covered?)
So many questions! Sorry!

Trace,
Your GQ looks pretty good for its age....I would even think about taking it to a Spray Painter to get a price to clean up the Bonnet and Roof as this would help you get good dollars for it.
If you go to a smaller shop, and preferrably someone who does work for a smaller used car yard ( they will only use someone who does a good job, but at good prices ), it would probably only cost around $600 to do it, so you need to work out if that will get you over $600 more when you sell it......Let them know you are prepared to sell it as is, but are also prepared to give it a spit and polish for the right price.... :)

I did NADS at 180k best thing I ever did, besides join this forum. your GQ looks nice and clean.
Plenty of young bucks would die to get there hands on your that. You'll be happy with your GU
pretty zippy when all is sorted and great on the HWY. My back is U/S and I have no issues after
a drive. As they say "just do it"

A very clean bus. If the interior is as clean I'd be putting atleast $5500 on it. At has a few nice little accessories which help that price..
As for the new one. Well same boat. The more bells and whistles the dearer it'll be.
If it has NADS then that's a great start.
Its an Australian law requirement that all 2nd hand cars come with a free 3 month warranty, and all yards do more. Its the $$$ your willing to pay will determine how long you can get..
Happy buying..

Being that it's done 415thou what's the general opinion about how much is left in it?
I'm looking to buy something like that but the k's scare me a little.
Is my fear founded?

Hi Tracemul7, I wouldn't mind a having a squizz at the GQ or at least having a chat about it.
I'm looking for a GU or a good GQ, if it's been well serviced and the money is right.
Send me an email and I'll give you a call markfroud65@gmail.com
Cheers
