View Full Version : Duel fuel back to petrol conundrum

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has converted their duel fuel (LPG/petrol) systems back to petrol only? If so, what did you do?

Did you:
- find an original tank and put it back in to have 2 tanks?
- put in a long range tank (LRA or brown Davis) and get rid of the sub?
- buy a new replacement tank and keep the sub?

Also, did you run it so that one tank fills the other or run it as 2 seep rate tanks in case one split somewhere along the way?

Rather than spend 1k on fixing my gas issues I am going to put the $ towards converting back to petrol only. Have heard many different scenarios and am confused now (for a change) ... Interested in hearing from you guys.

First strip out all the GAS bits, including wiring.
I'd probably put a long range in it, as now there are
a few floating around on Ebay and similar
Not sure how its done Yendor may know but the "NISSAN"
system is ok, pumping fuel to one tank from the other.
what about just pressing a button choosing the tank you want.
You wouldn't need that with a 150 ltr replacement tank.

I'm guessing you've got a GU?
With all the GQs I've seen the normal original petrol tank stays the same and an lpg tank is added.
So step one is just a case of removing the lpg tank, and piping etc.
If you wanted a longer range then step two would be to fit a sub tank or a long range tank. There are a few different options for these depending on the manufacturers of the tanks.
There are a few threads here regarding fitting a sub or long range. Sorry I cant post a link as I'm on the phone but a search should help.

@ threedogs - I tend to agree with going the 150 long range an not mucking around with buttons and pumping. It's a hobby car and there for leisure so 1 less button to press is better I thinks

@taslucas - i have a GQ. From what i can tell, the 1st owner had a main tank with a sub. The second owner had the main replaced with gas so I am left with a gas tank and the sub (60ltr?). I am thinking LRA 143 ltr atm and ripping the sub out but am not 100% sure if this is the best way. I will do another search on the forum.

I guess I am trying to gauge what others have done and if it worked for them. Cheers

@ Lucas do they remove the bigger tank and just leave small 35 litre job???
If you source all OE bits it would cost you next to nicks, plus you'll know its fits

I kind of agree threedogs. I am starting to think that getting an original good nick tank, new sender unit and leave the sub in there, run hoses and occasionally press a button while I'm away. Is there any cons with doing it this way? How many litres were the original tanks?

Even if I had 120 liters in total it would still give me 600+ kms. No?

Generally petrol GQs don't come with a sub tank, they just have an 80/90lt tank at the rear.
When they convert them to gas, they usually replace that rear tank for the log tank and put in a belly sub tank on the drivers side......

Why not keep your sub and get a long range one as well, you've already got a switch in place to switch between the two tanks....... so hopefully will be able to use that

So a petrol GQ with 90 ltr tank thinking tops 450 Ks range
150 ltr tank costs what $600 2nd hand complete, maybe 800 K range
Maybe other members on petrol can be more accurate. Longest road in Aust between fuel ??
Excluding Simmo or Canning maybe 600 K between servos ,
Downside as I see it as its alot of fuel in one tank if you cop a stone through the bottom of tank
Upside is now you can work on making the mighty MAV more fuel efficient ,with extractors etc

What engine mate. I know the r
4.2's have the pump on the engine so no need for a pump. Just a pick up and sender unit.

Imo the long range mains with the fat ass thing hanging off the bottom is a bad idea.. the sit down level with the bottom of the diff...
A much better option going 2 tanks, this way you get a much better drop off angle and reduce the risk of putting a hole in the only tank you have...
I've seen blokes rip gas tank shields off on easy tracks, and those long rage tanks hang lower than gas tanks...

You buggers you :) here lies the conundrum... everybody's logic is sound but all totally different.

As you guys have said, i dont want to risk ripping a hole in the only tank in the middle of nowhere or not carry enough fuel... Want to avoid Jerry cans if I can. I haven't actually seen a long range on but so far the consensus is to avoid.

Engine is a 4.2 Westy and yep, i will need to get a sender unit because the last owner probably threw it out when going to gas. Are they easy enough to come by?

Clunk, do you mean run the tanks separately so that when one is empty, you switch over to the other? If so, it makes sense because if you do get a rock in one tank, i guess you can still use the other? If you were pumping from tank to tank and one got a hole in one, are you still in strife?

So... Do you guys think this would be an ok plan?

- Replace the 90ltr gas with a 90-100 ltr petrol, that way the tank doesnt hang low.
- keep the sub (60ltr?) in place
- run the two tanks separately in case on gets a hole in it (not pumping from one to the other)

This would give me about 150-160litres which as threedogs mentions, will get me roughly 800 on open roads probably less in the bush.

Yep run the tanks separate if its possible...... I'd still get a long range tank on the rear though, someone I know has one on his td42 and I'm pretty sure it doesnt sit as low as what Westy suggests, I won't get a look until next Friday though.
My tank is actually only a 80 lt jobby and its a very lucky day indeed if I see 400 to the tank....... Most times its any where between 320 to 380 but obviously that depends on many factors...... They're a thirsty beast the tb42 but I didn't buy it coz it was frugal ;)

Haha... I agree on the frugality point. It's not my everyday hence I want to change it back to petrol.

Clunk, if you do get a chance to have a look at your mates on fri, would you mind letting me know how low it sits?

I'm currently on 31 kumhos atm and am getting about 300 per tank. Will this change dramatically when when I eventually go to 33's?

No problem at all, will post up when I've got something for ya....... will try and get photos too if its not too dark.

I must admit I never paid a a great deal of notice to fuel consumption when I was on 31s but from what I can tell there is a slight increase in consumption but how much difference, I think maybe the Max I ever got from a full tank on 31s was around the 420k mark but again, if I was lucky.

I have a petrol tank but must be removed..... I will have to check with Irish first to see if he needs it for his conversion he is doing??

Wouldn't be putting one in a rock hopper though.
They are designed for touring and touring alone.

I would spend the grand on getting the gas fixed, sounds a lot easier than trying to work out what size petrol tank to fit *LMAO*

What's wrong with the gas system anyway????, do you have a post up of that problem that I missed?

Hahaha... yeah tell me about it.

Nup, no post on LPG issue mate. Long story short, I've had issues with my gas the whole time I've had the car mainly because of cheap mixer and convertor. It's been worse since the snorkel went on. So rather than spend 800-1000 on impco gear and having it fitted,I thought if chuck the money towards converting it back to petrol.

I've got a 147L tank in the rear of mine (shortly to add another 73L) and the tank is safe as houses. I'd have no problem with rock hopping in mine with the long range tank......my lack of rock sliders and body protection is another matter entirely.

Thanks heaps for that drew. Kind of confirms what the guy who is fitting off the tank etc told me this morn. He has one in his comp truck and never had an issue. He told me, there is heaps of clearance and he is more worried that I would split the sub tank way before the main. I am going to see him on sat morn to talk a little more about it.

Maybe LRA have changed there designs in recent times???

Like you, rocksliders are definitely on the list
