Mine does this. Disappears with a few revs. I think it is the nature of the beast. Others have told me they all do it & nothing to be concerned about. I don't recall if I have heard an explanation.

Very normal with the 4.2's mate just above idle. I wouldn't worry about it. Mine does it as well on the GQ.

I've actually never thought it to be a gearbox sound.. I always though it was an engine noise / exhaust note..

Its a dreadfull sound when you first hear it, gears chattering??
Mine does it too about 1000rpm and gone by 1500rpm I think, I totally ignore it now.
Edit; more like 700 to 1100rpm

Mine does this, about the same rpm. Especially when changing from 2nd to 3rd as there seems to be a large jump in gear ratios. I put it down to driving style. I always make sure there's enough revs when changing gears.

OOOH that doesn't sound good, must be something wrong with it! ;-)
If I'd taken notice of the RACV pre-inspection test (paid for by car dealer) rather than get my own independent test done at a 4WD joint I wouldn't have bought my car, the RACV inspector obviously wasn't familiar with Patrols, he thought it had major gearbox problems. Independent test told me it was all good.

I always thought it was engine vibration running through the entire train.

Mines definitely engine shimmering vibrating just above idle which kind of harmonics through the drivetrain.

Feels a little like tyres might be rubbing on guards? Mine sounds the same?

Mine only does it from 850rpm threw to 1300.. quite low. So if your flogging it, no noise..
