I have need to mount the hand piece for my uhf in another spot now and would like to know if anyone has done it without screwing into the dash. Are there other ways to hold it in position?

I just use the heavy duty sticky backed Velcro for uneven surfaces from bunnings. It works well but do have to change the side that sticks onto the dash every couple of months because of the heat over here.

Don't stroke it, TAP it!!!!.....

I'm against drilling holes in the dash as I think if you go to sell the vehicle with holes in the dash then the resale value won't be as good as one without holes. Unless you intend to leave the UHF in there if you sell.

Find somewhere that has a bolt / screw hole already there and then make up a metal bracket that will hold the hand piece

For starters I suppose it depends where you've mounted the head unit and where the hand held bit will reach

I have drilled my holes into a removable insert piece, like the Space for the Factory Diff Lock Switch.

For one, it doesn't look as bad when you come to sell it, and two, it should be cheap enough to buy the switch blank or pick one up from the wreckers.

You could use a L bracket out from the side of the stereo like in this photo.

Because I'm in such a helpful mood, this is what I've used for stickin down the main unit to the top if the dash and the handset to the side of the instrument cluster

Here's my setup.....bracket for the radio is velcro'd to the top if the dash and the clip for the handset is cable tied to the Jesus bar.

MicThats what I did too. It works great.

3M VHS double sided tape will hold it easily but when it comes time to remove it there's a good chance it will take some of your dash with it. The tape is actually to strong for most automotive uses but I love it. We use it at work but at $120 a roll you wouldn't buy it for one off stuff.

Cheers Mick.

My new car came with two holes in the top of the dash where previous owner had a VHF radio mounted. Wasn't too happy about it but I don't think of it as that big a deal... bought a dash mat to cover it up.

I used an existing blanking area under the hazard switch thingy.
Works pretty good. I've knocked it a few times off road when real rough (annoying) but it goes back easy.
If you have a dash mat maybe you could use a flat piece of steel, 20mm x 1/2 or 1mm and make an arm that hooks to the front of the dash in the vents.
It can go under the mat and comes down over the front where your mic bracket would be attached.
Double sided tape, and the weight of the mic pulling, will hold it there forever. Mat will cover it up and no holes anywhere
