My Patrol gives out a big Fat smoke (once only) whenever i start it up after leaving it off for few minutes... i dont think its normal. I sometimes feel embarrassed because of this....injectors n pump were serviced recently. any idea what it can be?

Diesel I take it. My 3ltr Di doesn't blow one bit of smoke. What colour is the smoke? Does it do this when hot too?

If its a 2.8 I would say it's normal (without seeing it). Mine is and smoke is just part of what it does.

Does it crank much before firing up? If it cranks over a few times before it fires it will puff smoke as the cylinders are loaded up with diesel before it fires. Also is it more noticeable when cold?

i think mine is little more then normal...maybe because of direct exhaust system (one resonator in the middle only). its TD42t. if i off and start again, wont happen.

How many seconds roughly to start?

Mine will do it if I turn the ignition on and leave it for any more then say 20 seconds, it will crank over a fair few times before starting and blow a puff of smoke,

But if I turn it on and start it as soon as the plug light goes out, then it starts straight away and no smoke or anything.

My 4.2 also puts out a large cloud of black smoke on start-up, I just put that down to the modified fuel pump....................so much fun when someone is parked behind me with their window down.
