Touch up paint

Hi all

Does anyone know if nissan sell touch up paints for the patrols? Or has anyone found any paints of an exact match? Mine is a 92 gq, I don't know the name of the paint colour but its dark grey.
I know ford sell touch up paints, I spent $25 years ago for 25mil of paint for the falcon. Costly but at least it was an exact match.

In Adelaide you can get spray packs made to order.
Their matchup is pretty much spot on

As Pearcey says - just get the paint code (3 letters&/or numbers) off the compliance plate on your vehicle. Eg. mine is 531. I recently had a couple of spray packs made up locally & they were an excellent match.

Yeah grab the paint code off your plate and head to the speed shop.
may have the colour already $6-$8 or bit more if they make it up for you.
Plenty of basic colours in stock at places like super Cheap and AUTO Pro.
Take your fuel lid in with you if thats the colour you need to match

Don't forget as well, that paint gradually fades over time and the paint code that you have on your Patrol will be for when the vehicle was new. What Nissan can't control is the rate of fade and other environmental conditions related to your vehicle, so the paint may be a very very close match but not exact.

If you go to a specialist body shop supplier they should be able to, to use the Nissan paint code and using swatches match it to the exact amount of degradation in the colour. I had this exact process done for my Saab - the result was a perfect match in colour accounting for the environmental fading.

Good point zaid-m, paint matching seems the way to go. Have never done it before, can they supply different paint types? Ie enamel, acrylic etc? Which paint is best suited to a cars external surface?

Hi Parksy,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, here in the UK there are several types of paint available from suppliers, the two common ones are a cellulose solvent-based paint ( possibly what you refer to as enamel) and then a water-based acrylic type that requires baking to ensure proper curing.

Most of the touchup type kits are normally the solvent-based type, either available in small pen like devices with a small brush in the cap, or small aerosol cans.
I have only used the solvent-based paints for doing small touchup work, rust chips, stone chips, and have used the aerosols for things like colour coding handles or small bodywork accessories. Since the acrylic water-based paints require specialist equipment to cure the paint. I hope this helps.....

Depending on what your using the paint for even from new Nissan colours where never close matches off the machine especially there metalics. If you just want a touch up pen there available from Nissan but if you want actual paint then go to an automotive paint shop. Big panel shops and most paint shops now have Specrometers for matching paints pretty close even metalics now so they can get it pretty close without to many dramas. The specros may come up with a match for a Mazda or Merc colour that actually suits your car closer then Nissan too. lol

As mentioned above we also have water based base coats here but they don't sell that over the counter as it's no good for back yard work as the paint area has to be very clean. It will dry however without a booth but gets contaminated easy and requires tradesman who have been trained in water bourne paints to apply it as old style painting goes out the window when appling these type of paints.

Nail polish works to if you can find one close enough. lol

When I used to do brush touches on cars that where metalics or pearls I used to put clear nail polish over the top so they didn't have a dull spot.

So what's the go with metallic paints. Can you just sand back the area, prime in. Then rub back surround area then use these spray packs to blend the colour in and seal it?
Or do they not work for metalic paints?
