G'day, a guy I know through work wants to get rid of his 308 stroker 355 which apparently has a Holden vn head?
I don't know a lot about engines and that but I want something a little more than the rb30, what's your thoughts? He's asking for $3000 for it
Cheers for the replys

More power in that than a 350 cast iron chev, Price sounds ok for a stroker
There is an XR6 conversion in here somewhere

How would it go 4x4 wise on the tracks and that? It's carby aswell if that makes any difference. Also is there much I would have to change to get this in my patrol? Cheers

You'd need to run straight gas as 4 barrel carbs dont like hills or fit an EFI to it
Its a small V8 like the Chev it will look like it was made to go there

Straight gas will beaiser to get regesteard.
PLus external it will only be 308 - should be easier with the eng slip

Think I might go for it, would it need a lot more parts to actually get it fitted to the Gq?

Look up the company Marks Adapters. They have a lot of adapter kits.

I reckon you will spend another 3k at last fitting it in mate. You will need to get it Engineeed.
You should seriously think about throwing a big dirty Turbo on the side of the RB 30 mate. It will Boogie big time mate and you will smile.
And you will spend 2k maybe!

I've read a lot about the vl conversions but never get a straight answer, are they any good
For out on the tracks getting through some tough stuff a bit? I just have this idea of it just being good as a rice Gq lol

Ye I agree with mudrunner. Turbo the b*tch will cos a whole lot less than engine conversion, and Gove as much power. And will run awesome off-road. :)

I did a turbo conversion on my last vl. I did it properly with original parts like 3TA ECU, turbo auto original exhaust manifold and turbo, inlet manifold/plenum (they are actually rb20 sohc plenums), 600x300x76mm front mount cooler and my own custom cooler piping to stop pinging, turbo cam, i had the cylinder head welded thru where they crack and put 3mm bigger valves and ran a Cometic 1.9mm head gasket to lower the compression for the NA block and i ran stock boost 7psi. I did all this for extra torque for towing a boat but the gear ratios are fairly high and i didn't like how it towed but when i was driving the car it felt good for a stocker and fried the tyres with ease. Not sure what the ratios are like in the trol but nothing sounds better than a rb30 at 5,000rpm lol. I am lucky that it only cost me parts and i did all the work my self and it cost me $2500 @ trade price. It didn't suit my needs like i thought but it was fun at the time but as a bonus if you do the conversion and you don't like it you can usually get your money back because people are still after the setups, i even have some extra parts coz i bought 2 setups to use the best of each lol. If you want to know anything else about this sort of conversion ask and i should have an answer. Heres the bay of my BT125542

X2 with the turbo.
To swap motors its a big job.
Motor $3000
Holden loom and a splice job $1000
Adaptor plates, engine mounts etc $1500-2000
Engineering $1000 maybe more..
The headache and shame of owning a Holden motor $priceless :p
Turbo all the way..
If your up for spending cash get a variable vein turbo.. they adjust as the motor climbs in range, so in turn effectively gets rid of turbo lag...
Probably looking at $3000 for the full turbo setup. But again you can spend more...

Haha thanks MR.
Actually if i was to do it again i would listen to my machinist and bore the block to 30thou over size with new low comp pistons and run RB25/26 head with its add on and a nice T04z, that combo makes your motor a RB28 Hybrid. Should make 600bhp on 15 psi on a fairly mild tune.
