View Full Version : How to connect three auto LPG tanks

Hi Guys,
I have a Nissan Patrol with two LPG tanks.
Two tanks are connected with a hydrostatic tee valve the usual safe way it's suppose to be. This is the one used in mine.

http://www.amrgas.com/p_hydrostatic_tee_valves.html

I am wondering whether I can connect a third tank.
How do I do that?!
Is there an X type hydrostatic valve to use for that?
Any advice/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Hey mate. Had the same situation. But its a simple fix. All you need is a secound hydro T valve in the supply side of the current hydro valve.

thanks mate. Can you pls tell me more about your setup?

What model is your patrol?
How are the tanks setup? all inside or outside? What sizes are they?
Did you do the connecting hoses urself or did u get a LPG guy to do it?
Did you need to re-tune the converter after adding the third tank?
Thanks for ur help.
Cheers

i have a 93 GQ ute, running 2 tanks under tray and one on top, tank sizes are 60L, 90L, 200L(recently removed top 200L tank) had the gas line plumbed by a specialist (just for safety) and i have wired up the solenoids on the tanks so i can chose what tank is being drawn from(with individual guages aswell). so i did a quick diagram in paint to help explain, (its a bit dodgie but get the picture :P ) as the hydro valves control the pressures coming through them you dont need to adjust converter,

think that covers it, but if not ask away. :)

Thanks mate. Very useful diagram indeed. I'm just wondering whether it's possible to do this without using another T hydro valve. I mean using a some sort of T connector instead of T hydro valve between 2nd and 3rd tank and wire the safety solenoids on the third tank to turn it on and off at will.
I'm hoping to use the third tank more as a reserve, so I can only turn it on when necessary.

Does that make any sense?

Thanks

yeah i understand what ya mean, ide assume it would be possible and harmless if tanks are switched correctly. but not sure of legality of it, due to the potential of a hazard if incorrectly switched over. personally i probably wouldn't risk it over $80, too much can go wrong with gas, all it takes is for a solenoid to fail and your in a word of trouble.

thanks mate. I didn't think it was any cheaper than using a hydro valve.
I rather meant to use the third tank as a reserve one.
Can I use the second T hydro valve between 2nd and 3rd tank, and still wire the solenoids to turn the the third tank on/off?!
So, I have a choice of using the third tank as a reserve one, rather than using all three tanks as a one large single tank?!
Do you think that setup is ok safety wise?
Thanks

Yeah mate. That's how I have it. I've actually got mine all individually switched, so I can choose exactly what tank to draw from.

Perfect mate. It couldn't be any clearer to me now.
I guess it's time for me to get cracking. :)

Thanks mate. I just noticed something that I feel not right. I thought I might ask to see if this is right.
I shut the vale of one of the tank by turning the knob in the supply side. ignition is not on. So, gas shouldn't come out if I loosen the supply hose nut, right?! I noticed gas is leaking with high pressure when i started loosening it. Now the solenoid is off since the ignition is not on at all. and the manual valve is closed by turning it as well. So, I have closed the supply side of the tank twice. So, why does it still leak?!!
I would appreciate any help with that.
Thanks

From the sounds of that, there's one of 2 problems. Faulty solenoid, or still pressure in line. Try starting engine with, then turning gas off at supply point. If the engine turns off then its just because its holding pressure in lines while off. If not the valve might be broken. In which ide take to specialist...

If I turn off the gas from the tank by turning the shut off valve(or tap is the right term), the car still keeps running.
When there is no power to the tank safety solenoid, it should shut the valve and stop gas from coming out, right?
It doesn't seem to be doing that. because when I loosen the supply line, gas keeps leaking.
Even after I shut the valve by turning the valve using the manual tap, it still keeps leaking.
Is this tank bad news?
I am wondering if the valve controlled by the solenoid and the manual shut off are the same or two different devices?
Is it possible this may be the compressed gas stuck between the converter and the tank tap?
Then, if that's the case, the engine shouldn't keep running after I shut the tap, right?
Thanks

Thanks

I just discovered it actually takes around ten minutes to the left over gas in the supply line to run out after I shut the supply line tap on the tank.
Thanks guys. It's all good now.

Awesome setup ! I would like to get rid off the fuel system and put a second lpg tank.
how much you think for a second 85 or 100 l tank with all the stuff to go with ?

I paid $50 for a used tank with seven years left before next test date. It's APA brand and model A99 tank. 80 litres of usable capacity. Tank gauge was faulty and the float was making too much noise. So, I pulled the bits out of another APA tank I picked up for nothing and fixed that.
hydro valve available for around $80 on ebay. I bought a brand new frame for $88 and then had to modify it as well. You can buy a second hand frame from a wrecker for $15. That's what I should've done. I guess most of it is labour if you get an LPG tech to do it. Hardware cost is all around $300 I think. T filler, 3/8 fittings, 5/16 fittings, filll line, service line, etc you need to purchase from a supplier. You can get them on ebay as well.
I only installed the tank on the second tank. I got the LPG guy to do the gas connections and electrical connections due to my limited experience, I didn't want to take a chance in an area that the safety is paramount.
The third tank, I'm doing myself. I'm taking my time to do it super safe.
I will post some pictures of how I did it once it's all finished.
