Welcome aboard mate, enjoy the forum and the auto - I love mine. Recommend overdrive off for those conditions, only use it for highway cruising.

Gday Martin, welcome to the forum. I chose an auto because I believe they are superior for 4wding. Once you get used to it offroad you will be able to get a lot more out of it.
Have a little search around the forum as there are plenty of old threads discussing this:-)

Welcome aboard mate!

Pretty much all of the guys here recommend installing boost and pyro gauges so you can see what's happening under the bonnet, particularly when off road.

That's only with turbo diesels.

What engine do you have Martin?

As mentioned in your intro, get out with a mate following, if your suspecting wheel spin you have got eyes to check.
It may just be the auto slipping giving it a false feeling..

Welcome mate! Autos are easier to drive off road......better? Dunno, I have a manual and am happy with that but is just as happily drive an auto.
As clunk suggested make sure you're in 4wd an if its muddy, every chance you're spinning them up. No real harm done IMO 'cause you've gotta do that if you're driving muddy rutted stuff anyway.....all part if the fun!
I didn't check to see where you were but if you joined a local 4x4 club, you and the wife would get some driver training to make the most of your new beast, they'll go on some really fun trips am you get to meet another lot of fun folks.

Autos are great off road especially up hill, down hill not so good.
In mud if your spinning and moving forward keep them spinning
turn steering side to side for extra traction as well, keep an eye on the tacho
to monitor revs , Momentum is your friend in mud. The best thing you and your
partner can do is enroll and do an Offroad driving course, as your partner will need how to drive is god forbid
anything happens to you, contact your state 4wd body or club about courses and pricing

i am wondering what the next thing i should do in regards to downhill stuff as the car runs away a bit

There is a particular technique you need to master when driving downhill in an auto and that is "driving through the brakes" it is a technique you should have learned on your courses. Master it. As there is really no need for the torque lock up mod if you know how to execute that driving skill properly.
That said, if I owned an auto I would consider the mod but its not really necessary and I'd be doing other things first..

Hi mate, search for it in the search bar at the top right. Here is a link on how they are made: http://www.chaz.yellowfoot.org/Lockup%20Trans%20Switch.htm

if it is running away from you that little bit to fast put the AC on, it will labour the motor that little bit more, be sure it is in 4L 1st gear down hill & do as Dreyboyaus says, feather the brake meaning gently touch the brake to slow it down that fraction more again if required, best thing to do is join a club as they will put you through your paces & set you straight, dont always listen to mates unless they are very experienced because you can learn some bad habits, never have ur thumbs inside the steering wheel, they will snap like a pencil, just some hints

Drewboyaus
6th February 2013, 08:23 PM
The technique I refer to is where you apply just enough brake to hold you on the hill.....(and yes, you should be in 4 low 1st) and at the same time apply enough accelerator to slowly move you down the hill. You actually "drive" down the hill rather than idle.
It should work such that when you stop accelerating the brake holds you on the hill. It requires the application of the brake and accelerator at the same time.
It needs to be taught properly and practiced regularly.......
In slippery stuff downhill try not to touch the brakes, use the above technique and if you start tobogganing then you give the gas a bit of a stab to get your wheels turning again.
Best bet though is to do some training through a 4x4 club, they'll sort you out.

I would turn VDC off in this situation, I can't comment on the front locker but the rear one is awesome.

Just in case you were unshore.the stall converter is locked in low 4 in all gears on gu 2012 but the a/c on helps s#$t loads to slow you down diwn hill.Turn the vcd off when traveling slow very important it will lock all 4 wheels up and stop the car if the wheels spin ,and hey presto bogged especially in sand.vcd is u real on grave croagated roads with 26psi tyre pressure if its hot ,more if it's cold, tyre presure!! There are great guide in 4x4 magazine's on tyre pressures.
