View Full Version : Pulling Tourists out for Money?

AB

Is it wrong to charge people money to save them?

Along the main road from Eltham to Yarra Glen there is a tiny track that only goes for 200m or so...

From the road you see a nice little bog hole which I must admit looks very invitive.

We have loads of tourists come by at least once a week and have a shot at the track. It's very deep and even with 35's you just get through but anyone on 33's always get stuck and there has been a lot of drowned motors there.

My neighbour and I were thinking about putting up a sign (at the end of the track of course...lol) saying "STUCK RING AB AND ROSSCO ON 0400 *** ***)

$20 TO GET YOU OUT BETWEEN 9AM TO 9PM OR $50 AFTER HOURS.

Honestly I reckon we can make about $50 a month because i see 4wd's drowned up to half way on the door with no snorkel atleast once a week.

Is that wrong...hehe?

We are going to put signs down there tomorrow night, so I'll let you know how we go.

We might start a photo thread of how many people get stuck each week and interview them...LMAO.

No AB there is nothing wrong with that at all, but I would be charging a bit more.......something like $50 between 0900 and 1700, after that $100+ and that's still cheap....

Are you just joking or being serious?

I have driven past and seen guys bogged...Gone home, come back the same way 3 hours later and they are stilll there.

Even seen tow trucks roll up many of times...Spoke to one tow truck driver and he says he comes out there once a month.

It's only about 10 metres away from the main road...haha...Silly.....It's very suprising as it only looks shallow but it seriously drops off all of a sudden and then you got nowhere to go but forward and then it gets even deeper...lol

I'll take a photo of it this week.

No mate I'm serious, if they got stuck and had no one else with them and had no recovery gear, well charge them that price, still probably a lot cheaper than getting a tow truck.
Just my opinion mate..

I'd go for it ... not illegal, providing a public service, and the vast majority of people would prefer to pay 50 bucks rather than an expensive insurance claim (or triple/quadruple that amount paid to a towie) ... good luck with it.

Righto, sounds good to me...lol

When you think about it, It's a good price though.

We are only 2 minutes away and a lot cheaper then a tow like what Doggy says.

I'll put some signs up tomorrow with my neighbour and let you all know how it goes...lol

Cool, so now it is $50 between 0900 and 1700 and you were only going to charge $20, so the extra $30 can go into the forum fund from me......love it when a plan comes togetherhttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/

We should make the sign say "Welcome to Nissanpatrol.com.au bog hole. To be recovered out of this mess you have put yourself into please click this link, pay the recovery fee and someone will be with you shortly.

I wonder if we can have "on hold" music too....Like this....lol

Don't know about you, but I cannot remove the association with Reservoir Dogs and that song (Mr White dancing away to it whilst undertaking a fairly ordinary act on the cop) ... catchy little tune that should keep people happy whilst waiting for you to arrive!!! lol

Ok AB, my cousinused to have landrover when I was about 20, and he used head out to snow fields in Vic (he lived in spotswood) and used to offer to tow people out for twenty bucks, if they said no we'll be right, he'd come back l8r and charge them fifty bucks as he had to come back to them.

And recovery from towie can be up around 3hundred if he wants to stick to policy charging.

So what you are offering is quite reasonable.

Unbelievable how many German back packers I have rescued over the years, so I say go for it Andy, $50, but you also must remember that we Aussies are a happy go lucky bunch,
and most of us are willing to stop and help. Most German back packers have cool chicks with them too, and they won't steal ya gear while you're helping them out, like some so called Aussies will!!

Go for it, I spent hours helping people out last winter here, pulling, pushing (some UK cars don’t seem to have conventional tow points). Couple of happy people handed over $20, I don’t ask as don’t have tow truck insurance, but most seem to think it’s your job if you drive a 4x4. Good laugh watching executive, 4x4s on low profile tires struggling for traction on hills.

Heres a photo of my retirement plan...lol

I'm only about 3m away from the main road and It's a very sneaky inviting little track for anyone passing by. Little do they know It's very deep and the track actually goes no where too which is even funnier.

Haven't put signs up yet but will let you all know how we go.

dude if that is your retirment plane don't forget to get a tank on your ute or trailer to keep the hole full of water.

as for charging to pull people out i would have to say yes and no. if it is a sign and they call you then yeah go for it good on ya. if u are driving and see people stuck on a 4wd track or they wave u down not cool to hit them up for some money. that is my way of thinking i think most peoples is.

Easy solved AB - use of "THE DISCLAIMER" (cue evil music) ... something like 'enter at own risk  - call Andy for trouble free bog hole removal, your friendly local :icon_driving: !!' .... you see, adding the enter at own risk part allows you to remove all emotion from the salvage exercise, as they had ample warning and obviously bought it on themselves!! lmfao ...

Agreed 100% my neighbour is the person who is putting the sign up and if they ring him then for sure he will charge them but if I or he was driving by and they waved us down then I agree, we wouldn't charge anything as that would just be common courtesy as we all would hope people would do the same for us indeed.

What the hell is going on here people??? Where's the evil gone from the whole concept?? Are we all so concerned with political correctness and being 'dudley do-rights' that we have lost sight of God given opportunity when it smacks us right in the face???

No, actually, I agree with what you said ... you can't charge them AB if they just happen to wave you down ... but you don't have to stop and help either (mwah ha ha ha haaaaa - that's an evil laugh by the way in case you missed it).

And yes, I'm just being a sh!t ... I too would stop and help anyone caught in that sort of situation and would certainly not be looking for money ... but a callout sounds very much like a 'job request' to me ...

Phew. I'm all glad knowing that if I forget my wallet at home and wave you down with five fingers, I'll have earnt your respect enough to 'rescue' me...free of charge.

What ever happened to good old common sense by means of doing a reconnisance of the hole..... before you soldier through it?

Theres a lot of cowboys up here who plow through it 100 miles an hour without checking anything and theres a lot of drowned motors in that bog hole.

BigRig, you are one evil bugger...haha!

Theres evil ideas everywhere I look...haha

My mate will just leave the sign there, if they call then they are obviously desperate and have no other help apart from pay my neighbour $50 or pay a tow truck $350....Not bad when you think about it really.

Stole my thinking Ross, some tracks very close to me that I won't ivestigate without buddy recovery vehicle. As don't want to have to walk out to get help and come back to stripped vehicle. I'm sure Tony knows where I'm talking about and what I mean.

That mud hole looks very similar to one out the back of the airport here... I've tried it twice on my own and a few times with mates and each time I go it on my own the patrol sinks to the diff and I have to hold it flat to dig my way out and surprisingly it gets me through each time (or not surprisingly). Heaps of fun but so deceptive.. went through only a couple of weeks ago and looked at it and thought it was pretty dry and it'd be a bit of a cruise probably in 2WD but just in case I put it in high range and as soon as I hit the water I sank so fast the skid marks went up the seat as fast as the side of the patrol. But I pulled her through :) Good times

If I was unlucky enough to be stuck somewhere like that I would be offering something to a passer by who pulled me out, a towy wouldn't do a job for free if he was passing by and found you stuck would he? He is in business though.
I would happily pull someone out for free, If I got covered in mud, the car got covered in mud and they had no recovery gear well that might change my thinking.
Heard of a bloke who charges thousands to recover vehicles on Stockton beach, even if your only bogged. Now thats sounds like gouging...
Good luck AB, bit of extra cabbage coming your way for mods or lifes pleasures.
