Greetings

I have a short wheel base 88 GQ and am looking for roof racks for when I go away camping with my family. What should I be looking for and what should I be expecting to pay both new and second hand?

THanks

another option is some sturdy roof racks and a basket, price wise could
be anything from $200 - $1200, IMO

If you're near Newcastle I have one you could take for $50 cost me $400 off eBay, missing some hardware but $20 should pull it up, it would be perfect for a SWB or dual cab ute, I bought it as a full sized rack for my LWB and it covers under half my roof, was only used for a few weeks til I bought a full length one.

G'day Angelo-f, After I pay for a winch and cradle, I will be interested in prices for roof racks so I will be lazy and follow your thead. I remember that a forum member had some really bad trouble with a roof rack which damaged his vehicle. Try the search function for more info.

Hi mate - it's a bit of how long's a piece of string. I would stick with your reputable brands - ARB, TJM, Thule, Rhino, etc. The post mudnut mentioned was about a rooftop tent from Tigerz11 which damaged the roof and rails. Pretty sure the original post was by optic. In terms of new - you aren't going to get a lot of change from $1000 if you are after bars and tray/rack. Can't comment on second-hand but there is a bunch of threads on here about roof bars and racks.

I have a tigerz 11 rack and am happy with it, I have had 80kgs on it for some long tips now and have had no issues at all, I dont have a roof top tent hence its suits me to a tee, since it only cost me $450+$150 for my awning it does the job, BUT... if you want a roof top tent go with a more expensive option

If you do decide on 2nd hand look for one with full length gutter support

try find a tradesman roof rack and mod it. cut it down and stuff. they are super strong and have a rail that travels along the weather strip so no damage. im currently modding mine to suit a roof top tent but i dont have to cut it down just have to cut some of the side rail on the back. but im being lazy with it :)

I was thinking about using rubber between the roof rack and the weather sill on side to protect the paint and stop any damage. Do you think that would be necessary?

It is second hand from someone I know. The price sounds reasonable to me
