I'm kicking myself for being so clumsy.

I'm re-spraying the sills & lower part of the doors on the Patrol. Did all the prep etc, sprayed the primer & was on the second top coat of enamel...... all from spray cans. I then managed to knock the wet paint with my bum as I got up. An area of about 3" x 3". Grrrrr

I need advice on how best to recover the situation. My gut feeling is to let it dry for 24 hours & then rub it down again with either 400 grit paper or 800 grit wet & dry ('cos that's what I have) & then spray again ...... more carefully. Does that sound like the way to go?

Yep, let it fully harden Cuppa, then wet'n dry to feather it off, re prime, feather off again then paint.
Good luck
Cheers, the ferret.
EDIT, yeah, use water.

Had something similar a while back.
I clear coated old tail lights which returned em to a nice deep gloss.
But it was night and cool and it sucked the water up
Hair dryer got the 99% moisture out, but it took some doing and thankfully it was a small area.
Dont think a sill for instance could be recovered with a hair dryer.

Cuppa I know it may be too late but maybe you should have painted the sill section in "stone guard"
type paint, its a rubberry textured finish, perfect fo sills and lower rear 1/4 panels.

I know that feeling man.
I was painting my bar and a set of wheels this arvo with the spray gun. Finished the last section, stood up to admire my fine artistry and managed to spill paint out of the gun onto the most obvious section of my bar.
It's ok, we can get through this together :P

Jokes aside, think we have all done that. I for one have NEVER ruined a good paint job by touching it to see if its dry. Never ever

And I've never picked up a drop sheet and spread dust over the wet wall, nope, not me!

The sills & lower door sections have come up quite well with a bit of work.

I am now repainting the visible parts of the chassis using KBS Rustseal & Topcoat. Two things I have learned. 1. Don't apply it when the weather is hot. Instructions say ok up to 28 degrees. Bullsh*t! It dries to quickly & leaves the bloody brush marks visible. Not happy. 2. Don't believe it when you read that the Preval aerosol sprayers are good for this coating. I used almost a whole 'power pack' up spraying less than 100mls (thinned 15%), & had to wrap hot towels around the pressure pack just to keep it working at sufficient pressure.

Am now accepting that my 'showroom finish' will look heaps better once I get a bit of road dust on it again. It will look better than the previous 'stone chipped finish', but not by a huge margin. All in all it's been a lot of effort for little return, & I've still got a way to go yet. Bollocks!

Hi Cuppa ever think of doing the sills in that rock guard textured finish like on modern cars ???

That's on the books if I get more stone chipping as bad as before. I have got an aerosol of that stuff (a clearance line - last one left at $6) which I plan to cover all the stone chips on the fuel tank with.

I rubbed the KBS Rustseal (which is Gloss) down on the towbar & then put a coat of the KBS 'Blacktop' satin black finish on it. Not perfect, but it does look better, so I'm hopeful that when the rest is done it won't look quite as bad as I feared. The weather is a pain though. Not good to paint when hot or humid & if a coat isn't recoated within 6 hours it needs rubbing down again. With the weather we are having at present the 'painting window each day is limited, meaning I'm only getting one coat on per day & having to do a lot more rubbing down than planned.

I hate it when you paint something and a fly lands in it or a drop of sweat lands in the paint. Grrr.
