Well I thought it would be a good idea to get some jobs done on the old girl this weekend but as always I make things worse before I make them better.
Pulled the carbi off and gave it a good clean up and fresh gaskets (had been running just a little rough). Put it back on, fired her up and it idled way faster than normal ( note I did not touch any of the adjustments). After playing with the idle speed screw and it making no difference I shut it down, went inside for a cold drink and to have a think about it then when I went back out and tried to start her up nothing happened at all. The relay click when I turn the key and that's it. All electrics still work but it won't turn over

Start by checking and cleaning the battery terminals and the main earth to the engine.

Is it auto or manual?

Try giving the starter motor a tap with a hammer.

Yeh I've tried both those things. I also crossed the connections on the solenoid and at one stage it turned over for half a second once or twice and sometimes I just hear a spinning noise coming from the starter. I'm thinking of sticking a new starter in buy want to eliminate all other possibilities before I spend the money. I just don't know what else to look at.

And it's auto.

When you crossed the connections at the starter solenoid did you put power in the smaller wire that connects to the solenoid? or did you just join the larger two terminals together?

Hows you battery? have you tried jump starting it?

Check the fuse for the A/T control, it in the fuse box inside the vehicle and should be a 15 amp fuse.

This fuse also supplies the inhibitor switch relay.

I just joined the two terminals together. I only tried that because I remember my first car had to be started that way for a while. Just swapped out the fuse so its not that, it's a ten amp in this one though. That's what it says on the inside of the cover. I'll give jump starting it a go now

Start by checking the fuse first, it also supplies power to the choke and a couple of solenoids in the carby.

You might have connected something incorrectly or damaged some wires during the R&R of the carby.

It should be a 15 amp fuse.

Are you sure you are looking at the correct fuse.

Check all the fuses.

Which is the fuse that supplies power to the chock and solenoid in the carby. Yeh the a/t control fuse deffinatly says 10 amp.
Just tried the jump start and still nothing.

Did you check the 15 amp fuse next to it then?

My mistake. Yep found the fuse, that was the problem. Thanks very much for taking the time to help me out. Now to fix up the idle speed.

No worries mate.

You might need to check the wiring around the carby for possible cause of this fuse blowing.

This fuse also supplies power to an idle solenoid, so your idle problem may now also be sorted.

Cheers Rodney

Yeah thanks heaps Rodney. Idle still sittin on 1000 rpm and for some reason the idle screw is doing nothing. Got the rest of the weekend to play with it now

Mate do you have the high idle switch for cold starts, mate of mine accidentally did that with his and was about to pull
Things apart before he found the switch turned on!

Might sound dumb but give the starter motor a "TAP" with a hammer, repeat "TAP"

I have no idea what the high idle switch is so I'm going to guess no....

Choke on is it?
